Humble beginnings a great life make
Time well honored and given for sake
They ask one hundred fifty words
as if they were, well turds
Never had that much to say
nobody cares anyway and now for the chorus

A commendable work, which, like other quality poems, requires the reader to read, study the writing, then read again.

Pages could be written concerning the symbolism and depth of your creation. I will sum it up: A brilliant portrayal of the subtleties and irony of water that "no man dares to drink." Yet, it is the same as any other water: Roses burst forth, and what remains unthinkable to "free men" is the source of another man's beverage, status, and even privilege. Phenomenal work.

Roy, I can truly say you've taken a subject I've never heard written about before, one that could truly have nothing elegant about it, and turned it into pure, well, poetry... as only you can do.

Thanks for sharing the story behind this poem. You've put a different perspective on a commodity we all take for granted.

I've never been to a prison and certainly not had the courage to do what you did and live inside one. You continue to impress me with the depth of your personality.

Great job, and Happy New Year, my dear friend,
Rhonda

Well, I guess some truths need to be told. Of course, I never knew about this, and if I ask further, it will be denied. This was not a very good read, but truths need to be told.

A thinking man's poetry, Doug. You always manage to get my wheels turning when I read your writes. this is no exception. I usually have to re-read a few times to grasp your true meaning, but it is always good stuff. Happy new Year my friend. Bob

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. I have not had the experience of living behind bars and am ever so grateful. In fact, I don't even have it as an item included on my bucket list. While I found this to be an interesting and informative poem, I have no interest in experiencing it in real life. I trust you understand. Good work. No edits or adjustments.

Who would have it on a bucket list? I understand. Thank you.

I never thought I would read about a toilet in a poem. It's a good write. I have enjoyed reading your piece of poetry. It is clear and concise. Interesting poem. Thanks for sharing!

That's disgustingly nauseating...

It smacks of inhumanity, not any form of "correctional" function.

People go bat-crazy if their dog drinks from the toilet and yet our fellow humans are subjected to this?

Please tell me this is not a practice common to all prisons...

(Yet, I fear your answer...)

The authors notes shocked me. Till then I was wondering how to approach this poem .There seemed to be a cavalier attitude in the lines.but your notes have made it all clear.

Ewwww! I conducted writing workshops in the local prison for awhile and drank the coffee they offered me. But then, I also did a column about the local waste water plant and reported how clean and clear the water was after it was processed to be recycled. I guess the same water that shows up in your sink shows up in the toilet, too. I, however, drink only the filtered water from my fridge. Cheers!
