"On Christmas Day: Keflavick" is a story well told. There were so many places on earth where WWII struck took place, but most people never think of such places as US Naval Station Keflavik, Iceland. Thank you this reminder.

Lady Alaskastory, Thank you for your time to read and comment on my story. The quite generous affirmation is deeply appreciated, too. Curiously, Gert sherwood of fanstory, too, picked up on another story I had involving Keflavik. Her father helped build the airfield there. WWII left its mark on Alaska with the Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands of Kiska and Attu. Few know about the air war and the perilous bombing missions carried out against the Japanese Kurile Islands from Alaska or its importance in supporting the Soviet Union as a lend-lease way station for aircraft manufactured in the U.S., primarily Bell P-39 fighters and North American B-25 medium bombers. Charlton Heston was an aerial gunner on a B-25 bomber stationed in Alaska at that time. Then there were the '59ers from the late fifties' recession you may recall, too. Those hoping to homestead and find a new start. I kid my cousins living there about Alaska as the land of the midnight sun and daytime dark. Another acquaintance managed a hunting-fishing resort for years. It had a four-day snowmobile trip to the nearest town. He wintered over in a cabin with super-insulated walls and roof, like three feet thick and multi-paned windows. With solar panels, batteries and supplemental firewood, he was quite comfortable with a satellite phone and internet. He was very serious about timing supply deliveries. They had to plan the time between when the ice froze deeply enough to support the plane's skis and the spring thaw when the ice had melted and floats could be used. My cousin's daughter works for your at-large representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. I was chatting on Zoom with her a couple of weeks ago. She mentioned that the sun was rising and had to adjust the shades in her window. The clock was showing 10:00.

Thanks so much for sharing this story. I've known Rep Don Young before we both graduated from Chico State College in 1958. I came to AK in 1958 and settled in Fairbanks. I still think of it as a special place to be.

Often the nurses who served are forgotten, but should not be. They were very valuable to the recovery of many. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and good luck.

The next few minutes were devoted to Katherine questioning Schoentag about his condition, standing at the foot of the bed as Cogburn meaningfully suggested.
(The following few minutes....)

Thank you for your affirmative response. No question, editing tightens any presentation. Your effort is appreciated. Live long and write well, Fantasist

You need a heart of steel to work in a hospital in war times, but sometimes life plays a joke on you and you can have a break down and it needs lots of prayers to go back in that place of sorrow and hope, Thank you for sharing and Merry Christmas.

Thank you for a splendid affirmation. There are so many of stories like these in real life. The Japanese invasion of the Philippines caught up US Navy nurses at Cavite and Subic Bay, and the US Army nurses at Corregidor. Live long and write well, Fantasist

This is a moving story about soldiers get wounded and died. You are a good storyteller using a newly graduation nurse as one of the main characters to deliver what was going on in the hospital ward.

There are caring and moving moments. There are confused moments as to why this has to happen.

Good job.

Thank you for a gracious affirmation. A high school classmate died in Vietnam. He is listed on the wall, and interred with his family nearby. Amazing how I'll always remember him as if we were teenagers still. Live long and write well, Fantasist

Thank you for stopping by and for the unexpected scope and depth of your affirmation. My stories are of people in the lesser facets of conflict, those behind the headlines. Live long and write well, Fantasist

I was in the Navy for Twenty four years and wish that I had become a Corpsman, both of my daughters became nurses and later earned their doctorate. Loved the plot of your story.

Thank you for sharing a poignant moment. We all have moments of reflection. Your daughters would not likely have become who they are without their family's support. My maternal grandmother was a registered nurse who perished in the Spanish Influenza epidemic while working with the sick in a hospital. So I have more that a slight interest in this predicament we are presently in. BE safe and keep well. Best wishes for the holidays for you and yours. Fantasist

I love the drama and emotion of this story. You allow the reader to be right there with the characters at the bedsides of the patients. Your knowledge of medical terms and techniques of the time adds believability and a sense of urgency to the story. Very well done!

Thank you for your kind words and generous affirmation. I like to research the lesser known bits of conflict apart from the more newsworthy items.
