There is nothing better than winning first place. Our main goal is to win lots of first places as we can possible. Excellent work! No grammatical errors. Thanks for sharing!

Dear Mystery Writer,
So far this morning, I have read several entries into this Competition contest. They've all been a little bland to me -- (shhhhh...)
This one is quite different - it sums up the idea of competition really well - and I like the ending. Those second-place finishers may not be remembered as well as the winners -but there's always another day and another race. Great message!
One note:
--> the runners(') last gasps
Thanks and good luck!

It's like being a champion team that wins the pennant at the end of a long season, nobody remembers the runner up, only the winner, even if the game was an epic, beautifully written, I could feel every gasping step, only the will left, not the good feeling, well done, great free verse entry, blessings Roy
Typo It is the only way (to) win.

It is so sad that the second place finisher is all but forgotten after all the work to get into the final. It should mean more to all of us that the runner worked so hard and did so well. You used some good metaphor, internal rhyme and emotion in this poem about comptetition at its highest from
Good luck in the contest.

Joan, thank you! I agree, at some level there is bountiful rewards in a persons career who has been on a competitive team. Over the years I have seen amazing performances on the job from those who have competed. Those that led, time and again, were those that placed high in their field of sport.

This is an excellent entry for the Competition Contest. I think you have a little typo or muddle in the fourth stanza that you may want to fix. Anyway, this is very well done.
