Dolly, for most people who do compete to PLACE is something special expect the athletes who placed second and third. Most will try and try again for the gold.

A well-expressed poem with vivid imagery, ("the runners' last gasps burn like a hand in a flame"), and the change when the person places second. Disappointment is not expressed, but resilience and perseverance, and the will to keep trying are emphasised. Best wishes for the contest.

I think competition is terrific, as long as after the race is run, everyone can still remain friends. Sportsmanship can sometimes be a very hard thing for some folks to learn.
Your imagery was strong, and yes I do recall vividly positioned in the starting blocks waiting for the race to begin.
And you give it your best, and that's the best you can do.

Bill that is at the end of the day so very true, however over my years of managing people, I found those who were on a team, in competition often were the best producers.
