Strong and relatable poetry! the free verse pattern makes it even more exciting and you have chosen your words wisely. Your topic and presentation are quite good, good luck in the contest!

Loved the positivity, it's not bad to be second but the irony is world forgets them, train train train you can become the first absolutely stunning finish, good one!

Silas, Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.

That was breathlessly exciting. I was really caught up in this poem, the chase for first place, second never really feels that good. There are other races, and one day with that same determination, the runner will come first. I really enjoyed your contest entry, very well done! Good luck. :) Sandra xx

I really like this poem, and related strongly too. It is true, the names of second place finishers are rarely remembered, but sometimes second place feels pretty good. Your poem describes the drive, the stubborn determination to give to the competition the best you have, and never give up. That's what really matters, I think. Good job, and good luck in the contest. Couldn't get a handle on the flow. The rhyme not consistent, however the piece was very engaging and entertaining, which is by far the most important in my books. Good presentation as well.

Hi Vanni this is a free verse poetic presentation where rhyme is seldom used to develop in form.

Competition is always great when dealing with a fair hand. I noticed the photo and thought about the recent scandal of transgender male competing with the girls.
Best to you in the contest.

Ben ? Yes new situations do put a damper on what the truest form of competition has been known as.

An excellent free verse specimen! I had two parents (like most of us)---and two very different views on competition. My mother preached that the only person we truly competed with was our self. If we did better (in time, in core, in performance) than previously, we'd met the goal. My father (a grisly and proud WWII Marine)--preached that second place was "first loser"-- and boy, God help my brothers or me if we came off the field without victory. So I was interested in reading an article about that old quote everyone credits to Vince Lombardi: "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." As he got on in years and held many interviews he said near the end of his life:
"I wished I'd never said that quote. I was misunderstood. I meant the effort. I meant having a goal. I sure didn't mean for people to crush human values and morality."

H summed it up by saying:

"Winning isn't everything, nor is it the only thing."

Your poem brought all of that back to me...

Karenina, It is known that people who compete and place in a race are all winners. Those however who place send or third also will likely still drive themselves to feel the thrill of winning the Gold.

Wow! I liked the dramatic description of the race. You really show what competition is all about. And the second part reminds me of a coach really urging his team on. Best wishes in the contest!

This free verse, Second Place, captures the intensity of the race. The stamina, breathing, pacing all leading to the glory of the win - or not.
