As an Aussie, I am glad you enjoyed coming to our country with its sometimes wacky customs and humour. A great read, and I can absolutely imagine this happening. Best wishes for the contest.

Because you are an Aussie, your review means much to me. Life took me to many countries, many states and thus, many pubs. That night in that pub and that waitress stands out among all. A limit of 100 words did not permit to fully report the obvious respect and love those mates had for her. They laughed as she gave 'em what for! My love of Oz stretches from Port Hedland to Tazzie, from Cairns to Perth, from Adelaide, up to the end of the chain at Ularu up to Darwin. Many trips, many places, many friends. Did I tell you the story of sitting next to a friendly Aussie on a plane from Adelaide to Perth on my first trip thru Oz on business. He asked me how I was finding Australia. I told him it was just like home, Texas. It was hot, it had an outback, poisonous snakes, it had friendly people who like to drink beer and it had two cities which constantly bantered over which was better (Houston and Dallas). He laughed and said, Yes, and we who live in Adelaide or Perth know that Melbourne and Sydney are arguing over 3rd place at best!" Melbourne is most like my big town, Houston; blue collar working town. Well, never get a Texan started. As always, thanks and best regards.

Delightful story, well told, in fine form for a flash. You didn't waste words--you got excellent exercise in concision with this challenge. Great punchline!

Thanks for a great review. 100 words did not allow me to share the love that those "mates" had for the waitress. They seemed to enjoy the payback she was giving them. It was among the best pub crawls of my life! Glad you liked the punchline. I did too, the minute I heard it! At my age, I don't remember much, but I'll remember that night, that waitress and that punchline forever. Merry Christmas

Oh you POMEs know those Aussies and Kiwis! What a crowd downunder! You know, I'm 72 and I have less hair and less money than I had planned for this point in my life, but there are people who have made many times what I made, but have not seen such wonderful places nor met such wonderful people. I count myself indeed wealthy. You should have seen that waitress work that crowd! A mere 100 words gave me no space to report how those mates loved her and enjoyed the kicking she was giving them. Anyway, good health and good times to you, Ms Dolly!

-I enjoyed your story.
-You make the reader feel
like they are there in that

Merry Christmas and thanks for stopping in. My career took me to many countries and many states and thus many pubs, but that pub, that night and that woman are at the top of the list of memories. 100 word limit did not allow me to fully report the obvious love that those "mates" had for her or the twinkle in her eyes when she said, "It's my turn!"

Merry Christmas to you, too, and thanks for sharing more of the story.

Yes, you are so right. These people have a sense of play that could many of us a lesson about drinking in life's pleasures. What a skillfully crafted and engaging story!

They are very competitive! And, they truly do like being together, usually with beer. "Skillfully crafted and engaging story" is a very nice compliment and I appreciate it. As they say in Oz, "Cheers!"

Well this is an interesting story. That girl that kept running up and down waving a banner every time her team scored, had those yokels in a disadvantage, in that they were dependent on her waitressing them. she could keep them waiting to be served or accidently spill their drink on them
and they knew it so they had to let her get away with making herself a nuisance.

The limit of 100 words did not allow me to describe all that was going on. The reader has to assume that she was a favorite of the mates, but there was not room for me to describe the laughter or the hugs she received. My life traveling in sales took many to many countries, many states and many pubs, but that night in that pub is among the very best. Its been at least 20 years, but I remember it as if it were yesterday. I just wish I could remember where I put my keys!

I have been to Australia several time (Perth) and I have always enjoyed the people, their attitudes and the country. The bars/pubs were always a lot of fun.

Perth! I call it the Emerald City. I remember well that park high upon a hill overlooking Perth. What a view. Please allow me to tell you one more. I was on my first business trip to Oz, We had a new distributor and I was to make the circuit. Started in Sydney, then Melbourne, Tasmania, then Adelaide. On the plane from Adelaide to Perth, a friendly Aussie asks me how I was finding Oz my first trip. I said it was just like home. Texas. There were friendly people who liked cold beer, poisonous snakes, lots of "outback" and heat. And, there are two cities who constantly bicker over who is best: Dallas and Houston. He laughed and said, "Yes, and those of us from Adelaide or Perth know that they're arguing over third place, at best!" G'Day. Good onya for stopping by!

The pub scene is nicely displayed under the author's pen. I have never been in Australia or New Zealand, but through the story I can have a peek of the characteristic of the people living there. I enjoy reading this story. Thank you for the cultural sharing.

For we who languish-at-laptop in our desire to show others something new and interesting, your review is a real motivator. Thanks for stopping by and reviewing. I was very lucky that business paid my way to both Australia and New Zealand several times, even shared them with my wife and daughters. If time and/or money are issues for you, I recommend Ireland. Many downunder are of Irish heritage and you will find the music, the pubs, the grubs, the propensity for fun and laughter much the same - at a lower price - especially in April or September, never in summer. Let me invite you to my portfolio, look for a poem "Affairs of Ireland". Even if you do not play golf, it will interest you. BTW, you will find travel as a major theme in much of my work. I am 72, but I am still like a dog when a car door is open: I am ready to go!
Thanks for reviewing. Your review touched my heart. Merry Christmas!

Oooops! I had changed the name from an old poem to enter the contest. Look for "Heavenly Happy, Ireland Golfing" - just a few weeks ago...
-
It is so enviable that you work took you to those great places. Ireland sure sounds a good idea too. If I have chance to go, I will pay attention to the time period suggested here: April to September

I thought you have written a nice story. It must be nice to enjoy where you work so much to return when you are off. I could picture this all in my head. Excellent use of dialogue. A fun read!

Honored to get a nice review from a highly ranked reviewer. Thanks. I'm long retired, but if the old company would send me down there again, I'd work for free! This prompt gave me a push to revisit one of my favorite memories - that night in that pub was like being in a movie!
