I can relate to your story but on a different level. I believed in the Easter Bunny...of all things...and my dreams were dashed in similar manner in first grade. I'm not sure which hurt more, being laughed at or finding out there was no generous bunny? Maybe both.

I guess, unfortunately, these things are a right of passage for kids - kind of like being taken on a snipe hunt. Or maybe older kids don't get their kicks out of that anymore. Anyway, believing in fairies and the Easter bunny and Santa are using children's imaginations and that is a wonderful thing. A little magic - even if it doesn't last-is good for the creative spirit. (so sayeth I - :) but I am sorry you had that experience. I hope your teacher was more sympathetic than mine.

It's tough when your young and the bubble is burst. But, when you are older you look at things in a different way. There was actually St. Nicholas who started the whole thing and what the whole thing is, is that we are so nice to each other at Christmas because we are the Ghost of Santa. His traditions are alive. No one can tell me anything different.

Good for you! That is a lovely thought to keep. I wish you could've told that to Mrs. Boyd! :)

Actually, it was a nun who told us about where Santa Claus started. It was such a relief!

well, bless her heart! good for her. The ghost of Santa is a new concept for me, but certainly a lovely one.

Yes, children can be so very cruel - and the teacher was thoughtless too. You have written well about your sadness and disillusionment, but it was lovely that your mother encouraged you to keep the magic alive for your sister. Best wishes for the contest.

thank you! It's funny how things like that stick in your memory through out your life.(especially since I forget so many things these days :)

I have a soft spot for kids, being a tutor and also a writer of children's fiction. This is a real treat. Thank you for the nice size font, too! I am absolutely grinning from ear to ear from this truly magical and hilarious story.

Thank you, Shauna! That is so sweet of you! In fact, you have started MY day off with a smile.
Don't you love writing for kids? While some of my friends are bored stiff having to stay at home so much, I'm happy as a clam, writing for kids, and now, adults, too.
Thanks again for your wonderful comments.

Oh, that is so sad. I was surprised that you were only five in first grade. I can imagine your shock because you believed your parents and then to find out that it was something that they pretended must have been devastating in your young age. We never did the Santa thing. It was too disappointing for my hubby when he had defended Santa in first grade!

well, he found out way too soon - first grade! It was hard enough for me in 4th. Yes, in a way, I wish my parents had held me back a year, but I don't think parents did that back then.
However, we did the Santa thing, with my kids, to keep the magic as long as it lasted and when it was over there were always younger cousins to be all excited over Santa. Kind of a right of passage, I think.
