This is quite a delightful and heartwarming story about finding out the truth about Santa. Like your mom, one year my mom let me help wrap gifts for my two younger sisters. Without discussion, I figured it out. I really enjoyed your story and the memories it provoked. Well done.

Great take on the writing prompt, and best of luck in the contest. It's great that you mention the snowball effect realizing that there is no Santa. There go the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, etc. The up side was that you had it over your younger sister. You knew a secret that she didn't, and you got to help with her Santa things. A wonderful story. judi

A very well-written story about finding out the truth about Santa is always devastating when we learn the truth the hard way but we soon see why were kept in the dark for so long.

I suspect you were ready to know the truth about Santa Claus. Not that I envy the way it was revealed to you. But maybe you already had your doubts. I think your mother was very wise to involve you in being 'Santa' for your little sister.
Might just be me, but I'd avoid writing 'etc' whenever you can.
Best of luck.
Peace, Lee

really? I should be specific about similar things?
etc etc always reminds me of Yul Brinner in "The King and I," when he was talking to Deborah Kerr,(a part that I loved). But I'll keep that in mind.

I suppose there's no hard and fast rule about 'etc', but in narrative, is seems like a 'writer's shortcut'. Of course, in dialogue, anything goes.

You hit it right on the head of a nail when you say that some people like to have fun at the expense of others. I'm so sorry you had to go through experiences such as this...But I think to this day, my great grandchildren still believe that there is a Santa..

Good for them! and I hope their bubble-bursting won't be very painful. I think it always helps the transition when the person who finds out, gets to help play Santa for someone younger. Tat's the up side.

Children need fairy tales and we shouldn't dismiss these beliefs. Adults have carried on the Santa coming with gifts at Christmas. And it was based on a old man called Kris Kringle, who carved wooden toys for boys and girls. Now, it is a commercial riot. Christmas is love and we all need to believe in love.

Hi, there, Aussie!!! So good to hear from you! Thank you so much for the 6!!! It is much appreciated. And you're so right.
I'm sure you've heard that some of our governors have gone berserk with power, banning family get togethers, church, no this no that - except it doesn't apply to them. I'm very proud of our governor and our state.
I hope you have a happy Christmas. Do you have family near by?
Season's blessings and good wishes to you,
Katharine

Great story and great voice. I feel as if I'm sitting across the table from you and we are both laughing at this tale.
I also like the way you mix longer sentences and shorter ones. Fun stuff. Very punchy.
I'm unfamiliar with Disney's Tangled, so the ending burst my bubble a teensy bit.

that is so nice of you! The horse in the movie, Tangles, was hysterical and appealed to the kid in me. Sorry you are unfamiliar with him. You might throw caution to the wind and watch the movie. :) ha.

I think the teacher should have picked her story more carefully knowing there were likely children in her class that still believed. It is hard to let go of the magic. I still believe there are many amazing things that have no logical explanation. This is a beautifully written story.

Thanks, Beth. I must admit that I do still wish on stars, make fairy houses with children and in my stories for children, there is all manner of magic. Thanks again for your very nice comments.

Hey, Katharine. This was a fun post. I could relate so well. My eldest daughter came to me one day and said, 'you LIED to me.'
Oh, yeah. She was not happy I had been untruthful about Santa. I was careful after that to never make it a big deal to the other two. But - guess who is now playing things up to beat the band with HER OWN KIDS???
um mm.
--sigh--
Thanks for the smile!

that is so typical and if you had told her, earlier, that she would be doing that, she would have been incensed.
Thanks, Robyn!

I don't care how old one gets, but not to believe in fairies, leprechauns, and wishing on shooting stars is sad Pome. :) The imagination is a terrible thing to lose without it we don't exist. Faries dance with butterfly wings smiling in front of you and leprechauns hide your things where you have a hard time to find. When I wish upon a star, a smile is seen from heaven, smile woman. :)

I'm smiling, Mr. Hondo, TX. and I must confess that my 4th grade teacher did not permanently scar me. I still wish upon a star, and I make fairie houses with my neighbor's grandchild with a piece of driftwood that stands and forms a sort of cave-like interior where we set a table for the fairies and leave cheetos, etc. I wrote a story about pirates that has a leprechaun who joined the ship's crew as a bosun, but I have to admit I never thought of butterflies as fairies, probably because of how they evolved. :)
