As someone who has been awaken at 4AM for years by one cat or another I love your beginning lines except I have not been awaken by a gentle kiss but a loud wails.
But your last stanza is haunting with love lost and loneliness of other morning kisses missed.
Beautiful writing.
Regards
Mary
The ending however

    Cats have no consideration sometimes!
Interesting that you should mention the other morning kisses... i was going to include that somehow in the last stanza but i thought the reader could make the link themselves - and you have proved me right!

This is beautifully written with heartfelt desires. I like the complimentary picture of your companion and we are slaves to them just as you described. What a wonderful way to live. Thank you for sharing. I loved it.

Thanks for your review Annie. If i had any choice in the matter, I'd love to come back as a cat (as long as I was in a loving home).

This is beautiful, a lovely poem suggesting many things: I saw a very lyrical awakening to a new day, awareness of responsibilities to a much loved pet, comparisons between the two lives and how each manages, and ongoing grief and loneliness being part of life. So well written. Very thought-provoking, yet simple in style.

Hi Lisa,
You just described my wife's waking moments. One of our cats, Ray-Ray, doesn't mind begging at all. He jumps over me to lay on my wife's sore hip. He'll very gently wake her up with a light touch of a paw. And meows follow, incessantly, until she surrenders her comfort. Feeding the cats is her job. I look after the litter boxes. Our rules.
I'm sorry to hear that you're alone though.
"My hunter has gone
and I'm left to gather memories,
surviving in a doubt-filled drought." ... I especially like "doubt-filled drought", nice alliteration also with "Pragmatic puss"

"to play with prey as sport" ... good inner rhyme

My favorite line,
"Your breakfast awaits, Madame.
Her slave, I serve her."
My second favorite line,
"In sleep, I, too, chase dreams
to fill my empty dish."
Love the artwork!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thanks for your review, with its glimpse of your family life. Ray-ray sounds a bit of a character... rather pushy. Thanks for noting the lines you liked - always helpful to see what resonates with a reader.
