Very commendable work and so sad. We, the USA, treated the natives of this wonderful land so badly. This was their land and we took it from them with no remorse. I cannot feel responsible for that, just as I cannot feel responsible for the way the negroes were treated. I also feel sorry for the Japanese people who were made to stay in internment camps during world war 2. They were not responsible for what Hirohito? did but FDR put them away and took all their businesses. I had nothing to do with any of these atrocities, BUT, I feel so sorry for the native Americans the most. That is my rant and I stand by it.

Unfortunately, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour , all Japanese living in America were put in internment camps .. it was a question of security

The Indians were living their lives on their land

not only did the white invader take their land.... it also committed genocide ..that is a crime all mankind should be a shamed of.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for having reviewed my entry .

Our country has made mistakes, BUT we are trying to rectify what we did. The blame cannot be put on the people who are alive now, that is not fair.

We learn something everyday. Thanks for sharing this knowledge with us. I certainly am first time to learn that "Thanksgiving Day" is a mourning day for some. I am glad those were the days. Let be happy that those bad days are over.

Let s hope such a hideous page of History is never written again

fanstory?s system should have advised you that you already had booked a spot in that particular contest ..

I was unaware that you can only post two works per day ..so when I tried to post a third one I was advice and blocked

Fanstory should do the same when deal with potential double bookings in same contest by a member.

This portrays some dark history of the worst of mankind and just disgusts me. I am glad you shared this sad and dismal truth. We should have done and been better.

You could have posted an article with the information you have here. I don't know what to think about the Native Americans. I just saw a TV program about Custer's last stand, and it made some of the points you did. But it makes me wonder--if the Indians had been left to their own devices would there have been any progress? The land might have remained pretty, but would they have achieved a society comparable to what the Europeans had? The Native Americans of today have the opportunity to live in our modern society. I agree they were mistreated and the government often went back on its promises to them. Maybe it wasn't meant for the Native Americans not to prevail. Lots to think about with this. Very striking artwork choice, and you carry out the black and gray in your presentation. This is so heartfelt and beautifully worded. Best of luck in the contest.

Progress as we know it , I doubt .. they were a race that respected and lived in close contact with Mother Nature ..

the Indians considered the bison sacred ..they hunted only what they needed and everything was used of each animal, including the hooves.

That was there way of life .. far more meaningful than our life and our progress .. our planet is dying thanks to our progress ..

The white man stole their land ..one of its most famous mottos was :

Kill Every Buffalo You Can! Every Buffalo Dead Is an Indian Gone' ( not very Christian like)

And in fact the numbers don t lie.. it was a slaughter

    1500s
An estimated 30-60 million bison roam North America, mostly on the great plains.

    1830
Mass destruction of the bison begins.

    1860
Construction of the railroad accelerates human settlement and killing of bison.

    1870
An estimated 2 million are killed on southern plains in one year.

    1872-1874
An average of 5000 bison were killed every day of these three years. That s 5.4 million bison killed in 3 years.

    1884
The bison population reaches it?s lowest point. Around 325 wild bison are left in the United States ? including 24 in Yellowstone.

In the name of progress ... of course ..

The meat of these animals was left to rot in the sun ..they only took the pelts .. from some 30 million ( I took the lowest estimation) we get to 325. .. that s a crime in my eyes .

The Indians were located in reserves where the land was poor and they starved because the food rations often never arrived ..

Government treaties were promises in the wind..it s a well known fact.

Yes atrocities were perpetrated on both sides but the white man was the aggressors

the Indians were fighting for their land and their lives.

Thank you Judi for the extra star .. and for sharing your thoughts

Sorry if I might come off somewhat harsh it s not meant towards you personally .. ( smile)

Very interesting comments. Would you have wanted to live in the Native American civilization as it was back then? No books to read, no comfortable buildings in which to live, etc. As I've said, I don't know what the answer is for us as we look back on how the Native Americans were treated in those early days. We've got white guilt heaped on us by the Blacks. I've actually not read or heard much about treatment of the Native Americans by our politicians. I did read that they went big for Biden. You're with a lot of people, but for the sake of how we live today, I'm glad the Europeans prevailed. I see you're right at the top in the voting. Best of luck. judi

Tempeste,

You ably described the horrors foisted by white European 'American immigrants' on the original Americans in New England and westward in your two line entry. The alternative reality of the meaning of Thanksgiving is now being taught in schools. Indeed, turkey may not have been served on that first feast between the Native Americans and Pilgrims in the 1600s.

Thanks for those details in your author notes.

We can be thankful we discovered each other through this FanStory site. Stay safe and healthy during this virus crisis.

I applaud you for taking a different path in writing of Thanksgiving... which is a day of mourning for the badly treated Native Tribes. Colonization by white settlers everywhere leaves a stain in history. I know of Australia's and New Zealand's subjugation of indigenous people, but not too much about USA's. I did read 'Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee' some years ago and found it distressing, just as your notes make for appalling reading of cruel 'germ warfare'.

Colonisation ?? I think genocide is more appropriate.

The white settlers , along with the army and government just wanted to exterminate the Indians so they could steal their land ..

They exterminated the bison nearly to extinction... they reduced in just 54 years a thriving population of some 30 million (in 1830 ) heads to 325 in 1884 ..

That?s a crime ..and all they took were the pelts ..the meat was left to rot in the sun .

Yes I was shocked too when I read about the smallpox incident ..

Thank you for sharing your thoughts !

This is a great bit of history on Thanksgiving and I really appreciate the history at the end of your post. I didn't realize how bad it got. It is unforgivable what the army did to the Indians. Thank you for sharing this bit of history.

Thank you for reviewing my poem ..

the army but also the settlers and the government just wanted the Indians gone so they could steal the land .

In doing so they even nearly brought to extinction the bison .. their main source of food .

The Indians considered this giant sacred and only killed what they needed .

The whites had a famous motto

Kill Every Buffalo You Can! Every Buffalo Dead Is an Indian Gone'

    Numbers speak for themselves:

    1500s
An estimated 30-60 million bison roam North America, mostly on the great plains.

    1830
Mass destruction of the bison begins.

    1860

    1884
The bison population reaches it?s lowest point. Around 325 wild bison are left in the United States ? including 24 in Yellowstone.

So in 54 years the white man reduced the bison population from some 30 million ( I took the lesser estimation) to 325 ..
What would you call that. ??

I ?m glad you found my entry informative

A very different thought about Thanksgiving (which we don't have in my country). The notes underneath show a horrifying page of history, and a level of cruelty which is totally abhorrent. Unfortunately my country also has a very bad record for how our First Peoples were treated.
