Oh wow! That escalated quickly. Rumors get out of hand quickly, and it's a poison that spreads faster than the truth.
I'd suggest adding a poet's note on what a watercooler lie is, or your source of inspiration for this piece. I understood because of the image, but I am sure that many readers would understand the whole 'talk around the watercooler' culture. The term is not prominent in every region. And youngsters wouldn't know about it especially.
