Valentin is "Devining" - how fun! It sounds, of course, like "divining" and I wonder what new revelation will be seen on the map. I agree with Nicholas - how will he ever keep focused on school after this?
Suggestion to consider:
but tis summer's end. ('tis) since it's a contraction of it is. Maybe the apostrophe is optional now?

It's a divine vine that all the time does the devining, right, Yvette? :) One question though. What is devining? Do the leaves leave the vine as it merges with the map? Does it become the map and lead Nickolas through the garden without him leaving the shed? You leave a good story with a lot a question I want to know. :) Well... guess until the next chapter. Thank you for sharing.

I love how you work up to the climax of devining. There's something about this write that reminds me of the atmosphere created in Alice in Wonderland, although setting, characters and narrative are very different. When I read you I channel my inner child.

Suggest you delete "like"

I have not had the pleasure to have read much of your work but I do intend to remedy that oversight. :)
I like your story.
I particularly like :"A kaleidoscopic ripple ran through the vine in acknowledgement. Immediately, it raised all of its shoots and branches off the desk to stand up at attention."
That was a wonderful visual image.
I did not love the description "beady eyes" from the second paragraph (too cliche')
Valentin's becoming part of the map was pretty cool.
Good work. I will look up more of it.

These chapters are definitely an adventure for young Nicholas. To read about imps and gnomes in flower gardens is quite intriguing. To follow the teaching of these creatures is quite overwhelming. They would keep a person hopping.
