hello wise teacher. . .and student. I totally love this philosophical approach to learning. It certainly takes any and all the power of "a lack of self-confidence" out of the equation and gives it back to the person... where it belongs. I am a retired Pre-school teacher. I think this approach of teaching and learning is most visible at that age. . .and it's beautiful to be a part of and watch as it unfolds.

Hi Moongirl, thanks so very much for your wonderful review, kind words and the six stars. I truly appreciate that you took the time to read and review a post that is over a year old.
Aww, that's so nice that you were a pre-school teacher. Sounds like you were a wonderful teacher. So true about teaching the young. My wife is a second grade teacher. One of my true joys in life is seeing the look on her face when she teaches a child to read.
I wish our society would appreciate and respect the educators in our country a bit more, especially those that teach the young. All of you are the backbone of our society. Thanks again.
Take care,
Bill

Over a year ago!!! I mush have ended up on your bio page? With that said. . .the content of that post is still true and present today. . .tomorrow and always. We are always both teacher and student. I also loved seeing their little lightbulb light up with understanding of something I was teaching them. So precious.

Bill,
Another most interesting missive. Impressive. Yes, we can be our greatest teachers, but to do so takes incredible personal reflection, introspection and painful honesty, which in turn requires a huge dose of humility.
We are first and foremost the student. But we have to have that desire to see the world and all it facets have a place and thus learn what place it is. Everything is connected. Without desire, we do not learn. We become stagnant and apathetic. We, also, become very gullible to the agendas of others.
We have to possess the desire to be engaged in wondrous world of not only humanity, but all other lives and elements.
Within our sleeping realm, there comes a point where the student and the teacher meld. It is this meeting in the crossroads which evokes our creativity, our problem solving, and our assessment of how we have perceived the intimacy of the particulars of the day.
With all of this said, as you do eloquently stated- student and teacher are one, but not everyone possesses such. Unbeknownst to such individuals, they have missed out on creating their own inspiring legacies as an unsuspecting student views you with wisdom and inspiration crating a continuous loop or that pebble when dropped in the water creates an infinite amount of circles.
I love this piece of work.

Jimi, thanks very much for the exceptional review and six stars. You make many salient points, especially your last paragraph. I have come across several different quotes lately, that relate to the idea that we are our own teacher. One in particular is, "We are our decisions." Love that quote. Thanks again for the kind words and thoughtful comments! Bill

A very well-written prose about the teacher that always teaches others how to do certain things, what to say and what not to say. In a way we are all teachers who teach others about what we know.

Never a truer word spoken, Banana. I felt every word of that, thought you were describing some inspiring person from your youth, but you are quite right. We are our own teachers. It's up to u what sort of a job we make of it.

No truer words are said. Critical thinking and self reflection are crucial in teaching ourselves to think, learn and be receptive to ideas.
I enjoyed the read and the wisdom of your essay.
Good work

Mary

Mary, thanks so much for the very kind review. So true about critical thinking! I am so happy when I see one of my kids' teachers focusing on teaching the class critical thinking. It is so key. Bill
Comment from Gloria ....
Excellent stream of consciousness thought, Bill. I accidentally thought you were Jimi on the profile thought. EEP.
Hope to see you posting more philosophical ponderings.
A most enjoyable read today. :)

Hey Gloria, thanks so much for the very kind review.
I guess these days philosophical ponderings are less stressful than political commentary. LOL. It doesn't preclude me, though, from possibly posting the latter in the not to distant future.

I admire your writing, your thoughts. You expressed your theme so nicely and so true. I agree a good teacher is a good listener, and many failed even listening to ourselves. I liked your last few sentences, especially about thinkers. GOOD JOB

I agree with your statements about learning from the teacher and the teacher learns from the pupil. I also like your point about listening to others and ourselves. It is what I learned in psychology courses. Your essay gives the reader much to think about.

This story, The Teacher, is a philosophical-sounding article which begins, I feel, with one idea, about a real teacher, then changes. The idea of a pseudo being, who is more you than an outside source, speaks of an isolated intellect.

I like this little treatise on what it means to be a student or a teacher, or both, depending on one's point of view. It seems to-the-point and down-to-earth and easy to understand in general from beginning to end.
To move to a slightly higher level, I would just suggest eliminating fragments. For example: The unique, indescribable feeling one gets when they feel they have been privy to new insights.
Maybe say: That includes the unique, indescribable feeling one gets when they feel they have been privy to new insights.
Above all, though, the teacher gave me hope. Hope in one's ability to transcend the primal human impulse to resist learning and seek refuge in the comfort of one's own predigested worldview.
This one could be fixed with a long dash, I think:
Above all, though, the teacher gave me hope--(see long dash instead of the two hyphens I put here, to insert it in Advanced Editor)hope in one's ability.
Nice read.

Crystie, thanks so much for the kind review. Thanks also for the great suggestions. I originally wrote this as a sort of stream of consciousness in the early morning, never planning to post it. When I decided spur of the moment to post it, I did edit, but my mind was not really focused. I should have paid more attention. Thanks for getting me refocused.

No problem. I was thinking it did sound a little stream of consciousness in tone, or maybe like a very good first draft.
