I didn't realize until recently how the US. broke the treaty with the Indians. I think that is terrible. You didn't mention Mount Rushmore or the Black hills. I've been to North Dakota but I missed South Dakota. You brought out something I didn't know about the award money that the Indians refused to accept.

Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills are South Dakota, Beth.

Hi Bill, this is interesting, and I've learned something I knew nothing about. I have to say that I'm on the side of the Sioux Nation. They were cheated out of their land, bread basket or not. It's a disgrace. A legal deal was made and then broken. It's unacceptable.
There you go,Bill, you got me going, but I am a lawyer, after all. Ulla:)))

There was gold involved, Ulla. Remember the Golden Rule: He, who has the gold, makes the rules.
-
Yeah, gold. It always come down to money! Even so, I'm a sentimental woman. It's the Indians land. Sigh!
-
I wonder whose heads the Lakota stove in to be the owners?

What are you like! LOL

I can see why you would want to go South Carolina next. That would have been an easy mistake to make but you caught it. Good thing you're narrating directly to the reader to begin with meaning you were already breaking the fourth wall.

I usually narrate to the writer, but then he writes something else.

I've never been to North Dakota but would like to go to Sturgis and see Mount Rushmore. But wait, that's South Dakota, maybe I don't want to go to North Dakota after all. Keep'em coming.

Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon. Pennsylvania, Rhode Island. South Carolina -- then South Dakota.

You did a good job highlighting ND. I enjoyed reading it. I did not know of the Supreme Court ruling about the land and the Indians. The unemployment rate is probably low due to the lack of population, right?
Respectfully, Jan

In February 1963, I arrived at the Grand Forks AFB after having spent the better part of eighteen months of duty in Okinawa, Japan. In essence I went from the tropics to an ice box. When I first arrived the base was under the Air Defense Command, a few months later it became a Strategic Air Command (SAC), under the leadership of General Curtis Lemay. Bad quickly devolved into worse. All personnel who had been in Law Enforcement were placed in Security. Meaning, walk the flight lines guarding B52 Bomber aircraft in the bitter cold, all Winter long. My time there amounted to 20 months, but it felt like 20 years.

Sounds like a rude awakening to go from Oki to that icebox. I can see why your memories of it are not open to merriment. We'll need a piece written about that stay I think.

I think this is a brilliant chapter in your creative series. You have the knack of presenting a vigorous personal perspective that spices up the narrative. All I knew about the Dakotas beforehand was the old song, Black hills of Dakota.
Stay safe and write on

I guess it was about the principle of it all, doing what was right, just by the tribe. It's interesting to know that It and Hawaii have the lowest unemployment rate. I never would have guessed. You've written some interesting stuff here. See you in Ohio.

The Dakotas, Montana , Kansas, Wyoming, are places to grow on people. Not all find it rewarding as others. I love the area and enjoy the moments of no pollution and fresh air to breath,
Thanks for sharing your story.

Hi Bill I actually learned a lot from this post. I never knew about the tallest structure for instance. I have been through the Dakota territories and enjoyed the scenery for one thing. Take care, my friend. Bob
