That's a quote I haven't come across but it certainly leaves a very chilling vibe in its wake - we are living in such strange times as if chaos does indeed reign -

So many people trying to change history, which they can't or will never be able to do. And Lord knows there should have been some changes along the way. Now, we all just let things of the past register as history, and set in to change the future for the better. Thanks for sharing.

I have always been a history nut...much easier once I accepted earlier times were different times. You can learn from it and adjust actions in the present, but you must accept previous peoples lived in different worlds, big and small. Thanks for the thoughtful words.

This is a sad commentary on our sad world right now. It is well written and well rhymed. It is an excellent entry for the Rhyming Poem contest. Nicely done.

'Icon' is vastly over-used designation these days. Forgive me, but Lady GaGa is not an iconic performer. By the same token, some people for whom statues are erected are more accurately described as villains, as opposed to heroes.
I do not support the wholesale, chaotic destruction of statues. But some no longer reflect the mores and values of our society. Those deserve to be brought down, or housed in some sort of venue that provides historical context for their deeds.
Just my considered opinion.
Peace, Lee

I can go for a location with historical context. But I find it sad as a retired teacher that our education system doesn't provide as much 'learned' historical context as it used to. Thank for your thoughtful words and fine rating.

I think you did a good job on this poem.
We may share similar thoughts on this topic to some extent. I think statues were erected to honor people in their era that they admired for some reason. I don't think it's fair for us to look back from our perches today and judge that. Why not leave statues from the past and just erect new statues representing our time next to them?
Sorry, but I'm not sure what the title, Red Herring means.
I liked the phrase: "my chipped nose."
Good luck in your future work.

Thank you for kind words and accompanying rating. And I agree on not judging the past by today's standards. I meant 'red herring' as an action that distracts from what is really going on. Just a thought I had thinking about recent incidents. Welcome to FanStory.

Get it. Thanks.

This is powerful stuff, and so appropriate at this time. One should not judge an earlier age by the standards of the present. It is a pointless and iconoclastic activity.
What the hell do we do about the Battle of the Little Bighorn 1876, or the Battle of Worcester 1651. Sitting Bull, Custer, Cromwell and Charles all had very different ideas about right and wrong and all have statues somewhere that should remain to remind us of that.

Thank you for the stars. But more importantly, thank you for your words pointing out that evaluating history with standards of the present is pointless, and actually unfair. Good luck with your writing!

I though this was well written. I love your commentary on the riots and some of the scenes we saw which were horrible to witness. Your poem is well written. Your rhymes are natural and this flows easily. Great job.
