Dear Mystery Poet,
Wow. This is a really descriptive and powerful treatise on the cruelty and reality of war and its aftermath. I thought of Jericho as you were pouring out this scene. I imagine the fall of that city to the Isrealites was somethingrather similar to the first few stanzas. Horrid, nasty stuff.
But beautifully accomplished. Thanks and good luck!

This shows the mythic and gory parts of war. War is never for glory. It only illicts fear, death and destruction and much pain. Well told story with a smooth marching meter.
Good luck in the prompt
Keep writing and stay healthy.

Hello anon, this is an extremely well written and, as you say, gritty tale. It tells a good story, holding nothing back. It is convincingly real and the ending is so true and rounds the tale off well. ---

In victory, we honored the God of War.
Sadly, I heard Him cry, "Give me more!"
Such is our fate to wage war yet again,
for in war stories, men will never win....... Well done - Good Luck in the contest. Regards Dorothy x

This looks like the film story of 300 men, which I believe is true of a small band of Spartans holding back the might of the Persian empire. I really enjoyed this well crafted and even metered gem. The narrative is immaculate, and the flow is perfect, I must say it's a wonderful story poem, in pentameter and aabb rhyming, well done, good job, blessings Roy

In the real world, the ultimate God of War is Satan the Devil. He is the exact opposite of Jehovah God, the God of Love. If you are on the side of Satan, your only course is eventual destruction. If you are on Jehovah God's side, you will never truly die, why? Because, he is also the God of life and He is able and willing to restore those on his side to life everlasting.

I am a week old on this site and I am amazed to come across so many forms of poetry with so many diverse themes. Your poetry is very well written and fits the contest subject.Yes. In a war there are no winners. Only losers! Good luck!

A very well-written war fable. The story can relate to any war battle in the past or that may still come in our lifetime. There are no winners after war those who didn't die is scarred for life.

I think your piece captured so much of the elements of war. The emotions that overwhelm us when we enter into it, the fact that nobody really seems to win, that we can't control it, in the end. Vivid colorful images of fighting and bleeding and dying define it. It contains neither hope nor glory. That kind of sums it up. estory

A war is not a wholesome story
it contains neither hope nor glory
This is a fantastic beginning that drew me in. MY pet hate is war .and your poem has graphically expressed how there can be no win -even for winner and it is a trap since one war leads to another war. H0pe you will win

Comment from Gloria ....
Gotta say, 300 was high up on the list of one of my favourite movies.
I think this fable moves along at a good metre that does change from time to time, but still works marvelously.
I imagery of the horrors of the battle and the sheer animal ferocity shines through clearly. The ending and moral than man never wins in war is bang on.
Wishing you much luck in the voting booth. :)
