I don't think I need to prove book purchases - the voters in the voting booth are just supposed to ask themselves if they would buy the book after reading the review - but do yourself a favor and buy it because it is a great, great read!!!!! thanks for the review :-)

This was really excellent. You did a wonderful job of giving us an overview of the book while providing just enough detail to peak the curiosity--the very definition of an effective book report.

one eensy nit:
fall of literature; and when--comma instead of semicolon

All in all, a superb, interesting write. Best wishes in the contest.

You certainly did a great job at making me want to go out and buy the book or better yet, watch the movie. You described it very well. Good luck in the contest. Hugs, Teri

now you've gone and made me feel sad - a couple years ago there were rumors a movie was being made with sean penn and jack nicholson, two of my favorite actors, and then nothing developed - believe me, this one is worth the read! Thank you :-)

I didn't even notice you gave this a 6 until I got the private message - thank you for that, too!!!

I will take you advise and read this one. Have only read his "The Sound and The Fury." Only trouble I had with him (one of the all-time great writers) was his detail which some time were boring to me. But the dialogue, etc., was masterful although I understand he was drinking heavily during lot of his writing. There's a quote by Hemmingway when asked if he had a martini while writing that he unlike Faulkner never did (to that effect anyway). Thanks for such a good report on the book, I will try him again.

the sound and the fury is longer than this one and, I believe, more esoteric. I love both, but this one more as it has the same passion and storytelling ability without the excesses. It is hardly as spare as Hemingway, but I think you might like it more than Sound. I truly do love it beyond compare, so enjoy! Thanks for your great review :-)

Wow, adewpearl, this book report was so good I can hardly wait to get to the library tomorrow! It's a 'must read' for me now. Have heard 'As I Lay Dying' before, but only the metal band - didn't know it was a book.

You meet every requirement in making a report all it should be to inform the reader and make him thirsty for more. Very well done - so far the first entry I've seen, and the first I've seen of this contest. All the best!

Oh, I do want to read this one! I've wanted to for quite some time, but put it to the back of my mind's closet. You know what? I shall read it now that I have read your essay. Great job.

You have drawn a superb picture of William Faulkner's classic. I must say, having done a paper on The Sound and The Fury in hich school (centuries ago, it seems!), I had a love-hate relationship with the man (though I did get an "A", I wanted to burn the book when I was finished with the paper!). Now, after reading your wonderful essay, I am ready to go back and read all the wonderfulness I missed way back then, in all of his work. Thank you for such an enlightening piece and for lighting that flame of interest once more! Carolyn

one good thing about as I lay Dying is that it is shorter and, I believe, easier to understand than The Sound and the Fury, which I love also, but which demands way more time and attention. Reading this one should be fun for you now that you don't have to worry about writing a paper on it, too! :-) Thanks.

I enjoyed reading your essay, and you hit upon one of
my favorite subject books. I love reading about member
writing about their favorite books. You gave some good example why you like the book so much.

Great review! It definitely made me want to read the book. It sounds like a very touching tale. I also like how you included information about Faulkner. It's inspiring to all of us who are trying to write while working a 'day job'.

Call up Vintage books and tell them that you have a self proclaimed review to go along with Faulkner's self proclaimed masterpiece. Just do not take fan story dollars...they are no good at Macy's. Nice review. I think I relate to Whitfield...think that was his name...

Glad you're already conversant with the book - lots of reviewers have not been.
This may be his self-proclaimed masterpiece, but he called it right!!! When a man is as much a genius as he was, he can afford to be a tad arrogant :-) Thanks for the review :-)

    a "tad" arrogant...almost pregnant...that works....your fan, donovan.
