Dear Dallas - I loved how you crafted this one with imagery easily recognizable and powerful. The brushfires perfectly showcasing the end result...no one wins at all. Great submission with this one.
Thanks for sharing.

Basically, the human race has become so depraved it does not recognise the meaning of peaceful demonstration . There are no leaders left who promote peace they just incite hatred. Well chosen imagery and words to convey your message. Enjoyable read. Good luck in the contest Faye

Some hide their vile deeds behind the cross. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read. Good luck in your contest.

This is something of a truly explosive nature.
Not that i need to be politically correct, but
this was a very interesting topic with words of
substance. Very creative. Keep writing.

Thank you for the kind review. Intended as an observation, only. Very sad.

This is a great poem for the free verse contest. There are so many sad incidents and horrific happenings these days. Good luck to you.

The metaphor of the brushfire is most appropriate here. How very soon they get out of control, destroying everything in their path. The imagery in this poem is original and telling. I particularly liked the lines about sympathy and empathy giving up in the smoke of civil disobedience. A powerful piece of writing for this contest. I hope it does as well as it deserves.

Hi. A super free verse. It has strong images and a stronger message. When do the opressed become the opressors? When is 'revolution' just an excuse for vilolence. And it is always the poor who suffer, always the poor neighbourhoods that get trshed. i have always wondered why rioters trahs their won home...

Your social commentary is very powerful. I particularly admired your compelling "birth canal" metaphor. "Double Tragedy" is the perfect title for your observations. Best wishes in the free verse contest. Cheers- Joan

Thanks for reviewing, Joan, and recognizing that this was written as an observation, as opposed to any social commentary.

WHEN THERE IS VIOLENCE, BE IT A WAR SITUATION OR RIOTS, DESTRUCTION IS IMMENSE. AND OFTEN THE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE REBUILT GO BEYOND THE LOOTED SHOPS AND BURNT CARS BUT THE HARD TO RESTORE RESPECT AND LOVE FOR NEIGHBORS OF A DIFFERENT COLORATION.GREAT JOB!!

There are still plenty of King's. Look at Ron Johnson- a peace maker who, with a gentle touch, has kept it together. Also on the ground are reverends, community leaders- all who had to step in and calm things down after the police used tear gas on peaceful protesters, arrested journalists, brought in apc' s -all while never being forthcoming with any information and on the heels of such incidents as the black man in New York killed in a choke hold...for selling cigarettes. I don't condone the rage, but I condone looting or violence which ,by the way, has only been from folks coming from outside of Fergusen. Where are the King' s must be asked hand in hand with where is the fair application of justice and whatever happened to good policing.

I saw this evening where the ministers will be out tonight in full force, hopefully that will help. Johnson is a hero. This piece is not a judgment, but rather an observation. Hopefully the issue does not get tangled up in the actions of a few.
