LOL. Love the rhythm and the quick rhyming. The syllable count is right on. Sounds awesome when read aloud. I can see why this is a winner. Well done! Les

    Thanks, Les.

It was a little tricky to get this flowing around the strict syllable requirements so I was happy to get it spot on.

I am not in the least surprised this won, Steve. It's brilliant. The Kiwi is a funny little bird - I had no idea they once flew! Excellent poem, and fascinating author notes. I have to say, whenever I see 'Kiwi', I think of shoe polish. Memories of childhood! LOL!

    Thanks, Av.

I think that you can still get Kiwi polish here!

Congratulations in winning the contest. Very well deserved! It's amazing to learn about this amazing lovely bird in a rhyming Whitney form. Well done.

This is fabulous, Steve, really clever wording. And the poor old Kiwi even has to 'scuttle' around at night. It's a great double Whitney which should do well in the competition. My very best wishes, Giddy

Dammit no sixers bro! Loved this kiwi fun fact and I reckon he sounds like the bad ass cuzz of the emu from here Down Under...they are huge cumbersome creatures with tiny flightless wings, they lay a damn boulder, the bloke looks after the egg too...but get this...the crushed up shell is, wait for it...an aphrodisiac...pretty legendary huh? LOL
Great little romping ditty from your flightless bird. WISH I had a six for your impeccable rhyming ability, not to mention your enviable comic timing. Well done!
Cheers P

I DID know that the kiwi was a distant relative of the emu, although now supplanted by the elephant bird, I DID NOT know anything about the alleged properties of the emu's egg.

Saw quite a few of those critters when we lived in Longreach for a year, even had one in our back yard. They were a lot easier to spot than those damned elusive cassowaries that we failed to see in ten years in FNQ...

Very pleased to see this one knock Brooke off her perch - how the hell do you get 1400 fans?

Re: the emu...well you KNOW now! LOL
Re: Brooke...you must find time to befriend and review EVERY newbie that comes here and give great advice, thoughtful reviews and be available for comment in forums, conduct classes and have a very cute grandchild to write the most wonderful observational poetry about. I swear she is elastic woman. Everywhere at once and without even breaking out a sweat.
She DID tell me once she only had two plates, bowls, cups etc...less washing up = more time for FS LMAO

I'm kidding! She is LEGENDARY and I dunno how she squeezes SO much time INTO the day...and night.

    Good luck with that!

Yeah, all adds up to DEDICATION.

I've noticed it before with those who rise to the top in any area - you always wonder 'How the hell do they find the time?'

I'm guessing she's on her own - don't see how a marriage would stand the strain - although she still finds time for family....

Super impressive, which is why, on the rare occasions I can push her into second place, I know I've really earned it! :O)

ha. This is very funny and nicely written. I saw this contest, but it is way beyond my skills. You did a great job on both halves and linking them.

    Thank you.

Yes, this is a new form for me and getting it to flow around the syllable requirements was a challenge.

This poem was absolutely fun - and also darned informative (I had to go and look it up on Wikipedia)

The rhyme scheme is like a limerick and has a similar twist to it. Great to have a national symbol that is so cute. Ours is the Beaver - go figure.

Loved this.
Rose.

At least the beaver has got some defence against every stray dog or feral cat that wanders into the bush... and they're pretty darned cute in their own right.

Thanks for the great review and the six stars.

I love the picture. I love the poem. I love the kiwi bird. We call it a bird but it barely matches the description. Evolution can be strange It makes me wonder what humans would look like if a few thins were different. Great work...
