This is an excellent article. I had not heard of Elizabeth Peratrovich, but I have heard that Alaska was the first to pass an anti-discrimination law. Women do seem to be left out of history books quite frequently. Thanks for bringing her to our attention.

What an amazing story of an incredible woman. It takes such dedicated people to create change. I like that statement about not denying the rights all people deserve. Her example of laws do not end wrong-doing, but they recognize it and help in changing things. Excellent title.

What an amazing story of an incredible woman. It takes such dedicated people to create change. I like that statement about not denying the rights all people deserve. Her example of laws do not end wrong-doing, but they recognize it and help in changing things. Excellent title.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, the question whether laws would actually end discrimination seemed to be a popular one asked by politicians to deter people from wanting them. A similar tactic used by politicians today. Maybe someone should enlighten them about Elizabeth's speech. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review.

I love the way you showed her quietly knitting. It reflected her patience and a certain calmness about her, almost as if she knew that what she would do was making a difference for her people.

Thank you, Rebecca for your kind words. In all my readings, there was never a reason for the knitting. I can only guess it was a way to keep calm. Sitting and listening to such awful things being said about your race would have made my blood boil. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review.

That was an incredible speech, and the whole should be printed and saved. That this incredible lady died so young from breast cancer, is really sad. I very much agreed with that last point Elizabeth raised:
"Asking you to give me equal rights, implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve."
That could be applied to many countries today, as well. Well done, that was fabulous! Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

That was an incredible speech, and the whole should be printed and saved. That this incredible lady died so young from breast cancer, is really sad. I very much agreed with that last point Elizabeth raised:

This was very good and informative. I did not realize that Alaska Natives were the victims of discrimination. It blows my mind as to why anyone would believe another human being of any race is below them in value and unworthy of being treated equally. I'm glad this woman stood up for her race and was able to get the legistation passed.
