I absolutely LOVE this poem! I'm bookcasing it! So playful and tragic. : ) And your descriptions and story rhyme beautifully and the rhythm never breaks!

You buried a living creature? The kids didn't want three new pets, they wanted the buried one to be brought back. Poor thing. It couldn't even speak for itself.
I hope the kids at least enjoyed their new pets.
Surprise tale.

HAHAHAHAHAAH!! Omg! This is the funniest pet story-poem I've ever read!!! You poor thing when you realized what you'd done! [Trust me, I'd have imagined the EXACT same thing...especially after it smelled so bad! No fair!! Who'd ever imagine that mere hibernation would cause THAT?!] Well, at least the kids got something really fabulous out of the deal...and I trust you got your guilt assuaged in the process?! (Win/win)
FABULOUS entry!!! Definitely a standout!! xo

I am glad you are not a murderer, accidental or otherwise. My mother once killed a fish that had turned murderous, then she accidentally electrocuted the whole tank. Thanks for sharing this very entertaining poem.

These things do happen! As awful as you felt I'm so glad the students understood...
At least you didn't appear on Animal Earth's most wanted list!!!

Oh my. Yes, you're the worst, ha ha.
I killed my son's gorgeous lizard he
entrusted to my care, when he made a cross
country trip.
I still don't know how. It was living,
then it wasn't.
We suck.
Ha ha....loved this!
Blessings...

Comment from Dolly'sPoems
Oh dear Wendy, poor crab buried alive! What a shame, I expect we have to understand the habits of an animal before we keep it for a pet. A fun collection of Limericks with a slightly uneven metre, and a sad story for the contest, love Dolly x

Thank you for reviewing, Dolly. It did survive for a few months before its unfortunate demise. Yes, my metres are often slightly uneven, to my great regret and shame.

Comment from Paul McFarland
It's important that the meter of the limerick be correct. The second stanza was your best attempt. A hermit crab as a pet? This must be fiction. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks, Paul, I was wondering where you were! No, not fiction. This was years ago and lots of kids had them as pets - an introduction to responsible pet ownership, in theory. Remembering to feed them - they did. Ah yes, the metre! "Oh dear" in title and for content. Enough said. I didn't call them limericks - I would suggest they are "half limericks" - would that be okay to get me past your eagle eye? Okay ... I'll look again.
Thanks for reviewing.

Maybe I'm being overly fussy. It's two AM here in Maine. I should be in bed, instead of fooling around on FS.

Lol. Well, I have tried to improve it, but can't promise you'll be any more pleased with it. Go to bed, look tomorrow!
Comment from Verna Cole Mitchell
This was so cute, I had to "six" it. The meter and rhyme are both great, as are is the limerick quartette. It's so clever, it can't help but be considered to win the contest.

Thank you Verna for your very encouraging words, and also for the six beautiful stars. Greatly valued. (I won't get my hopes up, though, re the contest.)

This is a fantastic verse.
I love this contest prompt, as all on the site have gone in different directions.
Your writing is fluid and colorful, painting a vivid picture with the descriptive phrases used.
This is a strong contest entry that I hope will do well.
Thanks for sharing.
