Yes, stop. Not just stereotyping African-Americans, but all groups that are non-white - Native-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latin-Americans, Arab-Americans, Polish-Americans, etc. etc. Strangely, those whites who stereotype others are usually the ones who are culturally ignorant and have a narrow world view. You will find them living in communities that are closed and their perception of the world does not go beyond the gossip heard at a local watering hole (bar). Thank you for bringing out the one flaw in our American society - the inability of some of our fellow Americans to accept others, because of race, religion or ethnicity, as brothers in a nation that could well have represented "heaven of earth."

    Thank you so much - and your thoughts are spot on. Not only do people hear such rot at bars, but worse, children hear it at the dining table and grow up believing it. I have heard middle school students repeat the most awful prejudices that obviously they carried from home. After Indians moved into the district where I taught, I started reading essays about dot heads. I finally had to ask a student what that meant! How horrid. Thank you for your support :-)

WOW! *stares at screen* *gets mad!* This can't be real. I mean, is it legal to make such an ugly caricature? I'm wondering if I google the name of this (genteel Republican ladies) outfit, I can find an email address to send my thoughts. But then, I have not seen the picture and my opinions would be based on heresay. Do you have any suggestions? I am outraged as well. A fine essay. Your member cents were well spent. Thank you so much for sharing this!

    Oh, if you google something like image of Obama on food stamp, articles will come up that show the picture. Thank you so much for your most supportive review. :-)

Wow, great, clear rendition. Good presentation without getting angry or useing foul language. If I were to comment on the style I would think about the opening line. It's a bit long and runs through a series of visions. It could be "A CNN story me in disbelife and outrage today." It's clear and makes the reader jump to the second line. Maybe not that oepning, but something along thoes lines.

Collecting a thousand images must have been a heck of a mission. You did good on the presentation. Clear and explaining why watermellon and chicken are racist. That was well done without a flow of emotion that would put off the unconverted.

Nicely done.

Scott

    Oh, I had more like 5000 images. That includes xerox copies of all the pages in what were called humor magazines, sort of like the predecessors of Mad Magazine. One issue might have a dozen blatantly racist cartoons, many full page and in living color. I spent a few years going to libraries around the country not to mention countless antique and paper ephemera shows. Thanks so much for your most thoughtful review. Peace, Brooke :-)

A very well written esssay strongly rebuking racial slurs. It has good imagery and desriptive scheme. I'm in agreement with the author, but over the years I have found it to be futile to argue with the voice of ignorance. In the last one hundred and fifty yearss, blacks have proven their worth in science, health, and agriculture...in politics.

    I've spent a lifetime fighting city hall, being a protestor, tilting at windmills. The thing is, every once in a blue moon, it produces results, and that keeps me going. I was a student organizer in the anti-apartheid movement, which led to my being a professional anti-apartheid advocate - and we won. Thanks for your most thoughtful review. :-) Brooke

DAMN GIRL, YOU GO!!!! This is a wonderfully written essay with a powerful message...yes, it is still a white man's world and the mere thought of an African American becoming President is killing the souls of many a racist this day. I belive in our lifetime we will see this momentus event occur....maybe not this time, but in our lifetime. But, the I was all for Hillary and Bill taking back the white house, what do I know? lol. Great piece. Hugs and smiles, Susanne

    I was torn between Hillary and Obama - my children won me over to vote for him in the primaries. I would still be happy with Hillary (and Bill, I love Bill) too. Thanks so much for your most supportive review! Peace, Brooke

Well I know that Racism is alive and well in the world today;

Oh no! well I hope Barack Obama slaps em all with a lawsuit; a big fat one; he's a lawyer, so is his wife; it's incredibly hard to get in touch with either personally (I wish I knew how); I happened to get one of those phone calls thursday ; I swear it started out "you need to know barack obama is a terrorist" the news had it on and it said "associates with a terrorist; I swear it said the former; I called the campaign and cnn news to report this;

thank you for this post. God Bless You!

Amen! I could not agree more. It is appalling.

This is much like the Obama Waffle Mix that, sadly, was marketed by two men from my town here in Franklin, Tennessee. It was appalling as well.

Just a few grammatical areas you may want to check out:

issue a cartoon found on the internet of Barack Obama's picture on a ten dollar food stamp, ... this tripped me up. Maybe if you said "issue a cartoon of Barack Obama's picture on a ten dollar food stamp, found on the internet, surrounded by..."

family members of the editor of the newsletter ... I recommend "family members of the newsletter's editor"

shakers,
you name it! ... line spacing was off a bit here

Either the farmer chased them {,} or the

I collected [at one time] thousands ... not sure that this adds anything. I recommend omitting [ ]

"of society, manners, law yet buffoons at it." ... this sentance did not seem to flow well

So glad you posted this. Thank you for being raw, honest and in the face of those who think this is funny.

Your outrage is more than justified. I don't have cable so this is the first I've heard of it and I am appalled.
-- What a line 'Well I eat chicken and watermelon, too.' Excuse me? How could they not know that those images were racist?
The election may be over soon, but it's so sad to see that racism is still around.
Thank you for writing this!

Being an American of African descent I can understand how frustrating this type of thing can be. I've always felt that this is the racial nation (the United States) it is a sad commentary on how far some have not come, but I am glad that there are people who feel that this type of behavior is not conducive to a healthy America. Great essay and I'm glad that you spoke your peace. I give everyone a fair shake in this life no matter what color or religion they are I wish others would do the same.

I say AMEN and bravo to you for spending your member dollars so selflessly to promote a just cause. I can't believe someone in today's day and age would say that those images are unknown to them as stereotypes--under what rock do these people live? I fear for our country in the coming months, that this election, regardless of result, will bring out the ugliness of racism so very much alive in our country. I pray I am wrong, and thank you for representing whites as not all that ignorant and stupid. You make me proud! :)

    thank you - yes, I find their claims of ignorance disingenuous - they can't possibly say it was just food and could as easily have been roast beef and oranges
