It's so amazing that a beautiful sonnet could be written about just one tree, but you pulled it off, showing great skill and insight. I enjoyed how the sonnet takes you through the life and death of the tree. The reader feels sorry for the tree. Best of luck with this strong contender.

Your poem was delightful and although we mature and grow old I don't want to miss anything along the way. I loved your rhyme choices and the verse had cadence in my review.

Oh how profound! How very sad. A true testament of how we as humans have such little regard for things of this earth. The last line was absolutely it. I don't think any other line could have drawn it all together like that one did. Well written, nicely done!

Great entry in the sonnet contest. "Come, Woodsman" is full of vivid imagery, perfect rhyme and it flows smoothly line after line. So many metaphors can be read into your carefully chosen words. Nicely done.

Steve, I have to admit that just the word 'sonnet' is enough to give me the poesy heebie-jeebies.
I should not have feared.
I like this parallel story (see, Steve, I see everything as a story). Trees, woodsmen, a parallel story. A synergy.
I'm impressed with your ability to maintain the metaphor
within the restraints of rhyme and meter.

Well I thought the parallel was glaringly obvious, but most of the early reviews I got couldn't see the wood for the tree (ha, ha) so I added a helpful hint under the title...

I never give six star ratings. But I really liked this poem. If you would not be offended, I'd like to say that I can see it being read at funerals as tribute to lives lead in full and fruitful ways. It is a beautiful poem and a great tribute. It deserves the six and I wish you the best of luck in the contest.

"But every Summer ends in Autumn's tears" followed by the description of the failing tree and the inevitable ending,
"Come, Woodsman, swing your axe...."
On another level this could be viewed symbolically in praise of human life waiting for the blessed call.
