I thoroughly enjoyed this sentimental story about little Janie and her Granddad. The writing is charming and just the kind of fairy story that is perfect around the Christmas season.

Excellent, thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
DW

My pleasure, DW. I'm still experimenting with story-writing as I'm much more a first-person script/monologue writer, dipping into poetry. But good to stretch one's writing muscles, yes?

Hi Sharyn,,

I love this story it is just a delight to read. You developed your two characters with care and they became alive in my mind. Your descriptions are first rate and I felt like a fly on the wall watching and listening. Your conversation between Grandfather and granddaughter is superb. Your good writing skills are apparent in every line. Well done....blessings, chey

Truly-ruly real. That's just the sort of afternoon every old granddad needs to keep him around for another one. Great grandchildren are even more fun than grandchildren. Thanks for sharing.

Hiya there!

A cheery chapter full of hope, imagination and fairytale. Loved your use of italics to show her Granddad's thoughts, and the simile at the beginning there:) Well written and creative!:)

A charming story with all of the right ingredients, A small child, an elderly grandpa with a secret sorrow, and enough mystery to create just the right amount of tension to keep us reading. Very real setting, and great dialogue.
Good work, irish

thx so much Iris! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. I've only ever written 2 other stories - I'm usually a script and poetry writer, so stories are always an "unknown" for me! so i'm very glad not to have egg onmy face! :) Sharyn

If you don't know how to bring a grown man to tears and smiles - you've gone it with this story. Well written and so believable - I was an unseen visitor to the home. I'm glad you slipped in a little Australiana with the 20 cent platypus coin. Two Kleenex later, I'm still enjoying it. Thank you for sharing it.

aaah, a fellow Aussie! I won't hold Bathurst against you, Al. (I was born in Brisbane). I'm so delighted that you enjoyed my story, my dear. I write mostly poetry and scripts, so stories are always a stretch of writing muscles for me - but I'm very glad that it sent you off for some Kleenex!!!

Love your description of Young Janie's entrance :-)
Excellent dialogue between child and grandfather
also, good inclusion of non-visual communication like screwing up her nose and jiggling up and down LOL
What a delightful child she is :-)
A wonderful conversation about fairies right after she insisted on being treated in a more grown up way :-)
Oh, I just LOVE the ending - this is wonderfully delightful. I will have to share it with my daughter :-) Brooke

This story was very long, but I loved every bit of the well worth read.

You built the atmosphere beautifully - the innocence of the child, the grandfather's joy in her, his longing to go - his ability to dream along with her.

Beautifully written with not a drop of cheesiness in it.

My favourite line : "time paused in their bubble of lamplight"

One typo I caught:

always so sure that a fairy (would) peek her head out ....

I look forward to reading more of your work. A fabulous read, visionary 1234!

thx so much for catching that typo! one always escapes me, somehow! I'm so delighted that you thought it worth the special '6' my dear - this is only the third story I've ever posted (I usually do scripts and poetry), so it's a definite "stretch" for me! Blessings & much, much appreciation,
    Sharyn
