This is an excellent biographical posting about the life of a supreme American playwright. I learned so much that I had not known before. I have always loved the sterling plays of Tennessee Williams and am glad you chose to share your talent, knowledge, and research here at FS.

I remember studying Tennesse Williams in school. We read 'The Glass Menagerie' and 'A Streetcar named Desire'. Both of these left an impression on me. Thank you for sharing this post with us.

I thank you for this detailed account of the life of one of America's most prolific writing talents. I easily recalled the advice most writers receive at some point in their writing career. "Write what you know and live/have lived" and you should do well. This is not to say that you cannot write what you have only imagined. Writing what you know gives you a base from which to work and develop your skill so that you may write about things you only have imagined in your life. Of course, I am no expert on writing, but I have found this to be true in my own case, and I believe it may be true in the case of many other people.

I thank you for this detailed account of the life of one of America's most prolific writing talents. I easily recalled the advice most writers receive at some point in their writing career. "Write what you know and live/have lived" and you should do well. This is not to say that you cannot write what you have only imagined. Writing what you know gives you a base from which to work and develop your skill so that you may write about things you only have imagined in your life. Of course, I am no expert on writing, but I have found this to be true in my own case, and I believe it may be true in the case of many other people.

It seems he used so much of his personal experience of growing up in his works and, from that perspective as so often happens, his woes resonated with his audience at a time when issues of mental illness and homosexuality were not so openly addressed. He was born in the same state I was from although Missouri likes to claim him. He also lived in New Orleans where I lived for 17 years. He lived many places but it ironic that he never lived in Tennessee. You worte about some things I didn't know about.

I like: "mismatched parents" as a way of saying the marriage didn't work. The way you perfectly portray his father through words like "drunken rage" and "mocking words that chilled".
I remember watching the movie The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire as a teenager and thinking, "Surely people don't live this way - their lives can't be this miserable - this can't be real life. Of course, as I grew older I understood that it can be real life.
"As curtain fell" - what a great way to talk about a playwright's own death.

I can't do a properly comprehensive job but just aim to bring out the essence of their lives. I'm so delighted by your personal experience and I think that sort of reaction was common because his dramas could be so bleak and, yet, the reality of his life outside his prolific literary works and a glimpse of mutual love, was, in fact, utterly miserable.
