Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

Sometimes, it is difficult to express a sensation by using only words. This is a gift that you handle nicely well and it is clearly shown in this poem. You describe "tanka" very "tankafully". Metaphors are a great tool you utilize perfectly to take reader to another dimensions:"shards of light pierce the darkness" or the incredible "buttery sun shines through my window" are just great. Congratulations!!

Beautiful snapshots of winter, Janet.

I like your use of strong verbs in here and these are my favorite lines, dear friend:

"shards of light
pierce the darkness
"pine boughs bend
from heavy snow
cardinal sings"

And: "snow crunches
beneath my feet."

You made great use of the tanka form in this suite of modern tanka verses. I liked how each one pivoted us from winter scenes in the middle line to the comfort of sun, breathtaking beauty, and "hot chocolate by the fire." Thanks for sharing the balance of beauty and joy of winter.

I love your poem, the painting you used is beautiful. Reminds me of a Christmas morning at a farmhouse. "buttery sun shines through my window", "icy chill takes my breath away" and my favorite "walkway leads me home to hot chocolate by the fire". Very nice imagery. We are having snow here now in Maryland. I think I'll go and make some hot chocolate. Thank you for sharing :)

Wow, I'm really impressed by the fact that you can convey so much whilst staying within the Tanaka format.

I particularly liked the phrase "buttery sun shines"- something so comforting, almost reassuring about it- I can see it perfectly.

And I love Cardinals! I live in Canada and we have quite a few, always a delight.

Thanks for sharing, good luck with future writing.

Very well done on this Tanka. Love the pictures your words paint of a beautiful winter day. The last verse is very enticing, to have enjoyed your walk but heading home to hot chocolate.

Good description of a very cold winters day painted a great picture.
Love the snow but not all that comes with it. Cup of hot coco by a warm fireplace is where is where I would prefer to on a day like that.

Not only was this beautifully penned poem a delight to read, it served to remind me of the joy I feel whenever I reflect upon my decision to flee the cold of Michigan and to embrace the much more moderate climate available here in Southern California.

Thank you nomi for your thoughtful and encouraging review. I'm pleased that we fled northwest PA for NC about 15 years ago but I did like a snowy day and remember the beauty of them, especially through the window. :)))).
