I think all kids are fascinated with the world of turtles. I loved your photos of each species. Kids will love learning about Lonesome George... and a barking turtle (Terrapin).... who knew? Thank you for sharing this with us today.

    Thank you so much, Gramalot8, for such a nice review. I'm hoping that youngsters will enjoy learning about the creatures we share our planet with. :) Have a lovely day, my friend. :)) Sandra

Hi Sandra.

I was hoping for a T-Rex but the three Ts are good too. You included a lot of good knowledge in this feature. My experience with turtles is limited to the box or snapping turtles we have around here. They love being in the mud.

    LOL, you and your dinosaurs, Robert! I love them, and did letter D for them. You told me to frame Graham's picture!! Lol. Thank you so much for your lovely review, my friend. I'm glad you liked the turtles, too. :)) Have a lovely day! :)) Sandra xx

    I like dinosaurs. I remember playing with them when I was a child, before they turned into oil. 😁

Sandra,

First of all, I had oral surgery today and am on pain meds, so if this makes no sense, please forgive me.

I really enjoyed this post and I learned a lot. I discovered that all the little critters around here that I've been called turtles all my life are really probably terrapins! How cool is that?

Though I enjoyed the piece, I noted a large number of nits - which is not like you. (Maybe the drugs??)

Anyway, here are some notes for you:
1.) to eighty years for adults weighing in at between 240lbs and 420lbs.
--> delete 'in at'

2.) with the largest of these coming in at a massive 2(,)000 pounds!

3.) This has meant many are now considered critically endangered.
--> This means many are...

4.) They have [d-a] hard, scaly, domed shell(s) into which (they) can draw in (their) head(s).
--> you start out with 'they' then go to a singular description

5.) This is especially handy for protecting itself against predators.
--> This is especially handy protection against predators.
--> you've switched between using the multiple and singular form of address in this paragraph - need to pick one and stick with it.

6.) have a lighter(-)coloured shell than those from cooler climates(.)

7.) Mediterranean Tortoise African Tortoise
--> header is off/skewed

8.) Because tortoises don't swim, they will burrow
--> earlier you used 'tortoise' as a plural - but here you're are using it with an 's' to be plural, be consistent - I saw this later, too. Check throughout

9.) by pirates and sailors; their shells were their trophies.
--> and their shells were kept as trophies
--> I would imagine the tortoises DO think of their shells as their trophies

10.) the introduction of goats, pigs(,) and rats then wrecked and destroyed their habitats.
--> it wasn't the introduction of these animals that was the problem -- it was what these animals did over time...

11.) and his death represented the (threat of/ possibility of) extinction of these once(-)great creatures.
--> was he really the last one?

12.) Wild swampy water terrapins
--> these headers are off-center

13.) And finally, the sex of a child is dictated by the temp(e)rature.
--> temperature of what? water? sea? Mom?
--> but don't they lay a bunch of eggs in a clutch? Does that mean that most of the eggs in the nest will turn out to be one sex over the other?

I am sorry for the rating. I hope this helps - and is right!!! Please let me know if I can help or if I've misunderstood something. Thanks so much - I really appreciate all the time and effort this journey is taking. I learn something new every time!

    I forgot to mention, yes that was the last of the giant Galapagos turtles. There are some large turtles on another of the islands with which they tried to get Lonesome George to mate with one, but he wasn't interested. They managed once, but it wasn't successful. :)

-Good illustration, photos, and information
about the three T's, Sandra.
-Overall, turtles have a tough life, especially when
it comes to their eggs and whether or not they will hatch,
and then if they do, will they make it to the ocean?
-Others, like the terrapins, are in danger because they will
be in the road. There are actually volunteers who
make sure they are safely on land.
-One of the more amazing things
is how large and old some of them are!
-I don't think they are up for winning any races!
-I didn't know about the Bishop and the Galapago turtle;
I always associated it with Darwin.
-Poor "Lonesome George," but he did make it to 100 years old!
-Very interesting and well done, my friend.

    Thank you so very much, dear Pam, for the six shiny stars, and really nice review. I'd never heard of Lonesome George, they did try finding him a mate from one of the other islands, but apart from once, (reluctantly) he wasn't interested. That one time, it was unsuccessful. Sad, isn't it, after being there for tens of thousands of years, we find them and wipe them out. Have a lovely day, my friend. :)) Big hugs. Sandra xxxxx

    You are very welcome and deserving of the stars and review, Sandra. I guess Lonesome George was just content the way he was. You have a great day, too!

This is my all time favorite. It is full of information that i never realized before. A turtle is not just a turtle as we have confused all three into one catagory

    Hi, Barb, I'm even more delighted that I picked the turtle now! I'm so pleased you liked it. They are really fascinating creatures, aren't they? I had a tortoise as a pet for years, he wandered off one day and we never saw him again, even though we searched everwhere. Thank you for your lovely review, my friend. Have a wonderful day. :)) Sandra xx

Amazing the balance. The sea turtle comes to shore and drops thousands of eggs and only a few survive when in some places they live hundreds of years.
Very good presentation Sandy.
Your post does a great job of teaching

    Aw, bless you, my dear friend. I have learnt such a lot whilst researching these amazing creatures, I'm delighted you enjoyed reading it. It's the run down to the sea that picks off the poor little hatchlings. Not a nice start to life, is it?

    Thank you so very much for the golden star, an lovely review, my friend. I always appreciate you. Sending you a big hug! :)) Sandy. xxxx

For some reason I have this one twice. I can't wait to see what you come up with for U. Ungulate is a whole family of animals and ursa is Latin. Unless you want to go with unicorn, I can't think of anything else.

    I don't think there are any unicorns, Cindy, so I can't research them. I wish there were some. I do have one for U, not telling what, though. Lol. I'm so glad you picked this one to review, the other one was posted in error. I only found out this morning! Thank you so much for reading this and the lovely review. I'm going to look up that word, Ungulate, I've never heard of it. :)) Have a lovely day, my friend. :)) Sandra xx

It seems you posted this one twice? I reviewed before, but see now that you rectified the title. In the other one I saw AmaZin Animals. (failed the g) but another typo I saw is also here: the first time you write "tempurature" (near the end). The second time is good "temperature"..

    I have had a nightmare time putting this one one, Marjon, my brain is now quite scrambled. :( I have sorted them out now, and done a proper edit this morning on the real letter T. Last night I went to bed thinking I'd managed to put things right, and woke up this morning finding out I'd made it worse! I should have had a load of 1 or 2 rating stars as it was! Thank you for looking at this one, I'm glad you did so you got your member dollars for reading it. I've asked the other 5 if they would just go back and write anything and get theirs. I'm so embarrassed about the whole thing! Have a lovely day, my friend, I've given up on mine!! :)) Sandra xx

    Nothing irreparable happened! No, I reviewed the other one, not for the member dollars, but for making you aware that there was still one typo. Well, all ok now, so relax and have the rest of the day to enjoy!

Awe, I have been waiting for this chapter, and it is lovely. I have only one thing to say about turtles and that is that I love them.
I also have a very special memory of Kay in Tobago who sat at her private bay with a shotgun on the ready when the giant turtles came in to lay their eggs. She wouldn't have hesitated to shoot anyone coming for their eggs. But nobody dared. The locals were all terrified, and at the same time they loved her. Talk about a love hate relationship. But, meanwhile the turtles were safe. It still brings tears to my eyes.
Thank you for sharing this and such great information about the great variety of turtles. It's so well written. Ulla xxxx

    I'm in love with Kay!! Lol I wish more people were like her. When I think about the Galapagos turtles, it makes me so cross that they are all gone now. They lived there for tens of thousands of years, and in no time at all, we wipe them out.
    Thank you, my friend, for this lovely review, and beautiful stars. They both are so appreciated. Have a wonderful day! Big hugs :)) Sandra xxx

    It's hotter than hell in Enland at the moment! What's it like in your part of Spain? xx
reply by Ulla on 11-Aug-2020
    She died many years ago, but what a character she was. All my lizards are called George, because that's what she named her own. That is my little tribute to her memory,
    Like you, we are hot. We have been up to almost 40 degrees a few days ago and now we are about 30. It actually feels quite pleasant. Sick, isn't it?
    What is not so pleasant is that the Corona is spreading again. No cases in my valley but Denia has a few and rising. But not like up north in Catalunia and Navarra. Sigh!!!

    I'm glad my cousin didn't go this year, then, both her and her partner are elderly and have diabeties, had open heart surgery, and Jack has dementia. And, at those temperatures, I'm glad I'm not there!! I like the tribute to Kay. :)) xxx
reply by Ulla on 11-Aug-2020
    Yes, I agree, with thheir conditions is best that they didn't go. I will never forget Kay. She was such a character. She could make me laugh and cry all at the same time. What an ego she had!

I like what you've presented here about turtles. I didn't know that the giant leather backs were quite that large. I also didn't know that their was a turtle that barks. That's awesome! Thanks for sharing this well written work. I'm enjoying them. Well done!
