So true, we all think about retirement as a dulce fair Niente. Enjoy the cruise, drinks without count, nature gathering, memories writing, but in reality we change the old job for a new one working around and in the house.

Thank you for your excellent review. You are exactly right, retirement is just a matter of changing our workplaces, but also to work as a team.

    Thanks again...Bill

Your take on the retirement situation is right on. Your poem is clear in its message of misinformation in the mind of the husband who has not communicated and planned a retirement that is inclusive. Even when not retired, too much togetherness is not a great idea. We are individuals with our own agendas, sometimes, in a world where we have a limited future.

It is all in the word, "retire."
It takes away your job, your profession, your avocation, your status.

A friend of mine recently retired. He told people, when asked, what kind of work he did. He said he was retired. They looked away.

When talking about religion or politics, they retorted, "not now old timer."
I asked him if he had a bank account. He said he did. Good, just tell them you are in banking.

Tell people you are in "Proyectos." [ Use the Spanish word].
It means a project, a plan, a scheme, venture, [being busy].

Retired, or just tired, men need to realize that women actually do the most work, and sometimes need some help and compassion.
Just saying....

Thank you very much for your wonderful and funny review and for the six-stars, I appreciate it.

I agree with every word you said, retirement does take away a man's status. And,I also agree that women do most of the work. They not only work public jobs but then come home and cook and clean, mine does and she's 68 years old. I'm retired so I help her with whatever I can. It does take teamwork.

    Thanks again my friend...have a great week...Bill

This is an interesting write with a combination of humor and reality. A good marriage takes constant work, planning, reevaluation and a lot of prayer and patience. Thanks for Sharing. Bill

    Hello Bill,

Thanks for your review, I appreciate it. Retirement will test a marriage in many ways, especially if the man tries to be the dominant one within the household and barking out orders and instructions to the wife on how and when to do things.

    Thanks again...Bill

Hello Bill, a fun poem, well written and a good read. Has your wife read it or is it well hidden from view? LOL! Good rhyme scheme maintained throughout the poem and a good appropriate picture. Good advice in your author notes, which I will not allow my husband to see LOL. Well done, warm regards Dorothy x

I only let my wife see the real juicy romantic stuff I write...LOL

Seriously, I thank God for her everyday. We have been together for 53 years and I have been retired for the last 19 years.

It seems that the 'honey-do-list must have been among the least of your domestic troubles. Your amelioration solution to the
age-old wife problem is kind of like easing the nagging pains in your head, by discontinuing hitting it against the wall, isn't it?
(I'll bet that job is more enjoyable than ever.)
;o)

    Thank you for your review.

This is a very serious situation. According to the experts those marriages that end in divorce within a five year period is 50 % of the new marriages and they also mentioned that a large number of retired couples end in divorce within a 2 year period. This was on the World news.

You're welcome, Cedar. Your piece is intentionally light-hearted, and if there had been any doubts, the illustration would have allayed them. So, my review was written accordingly. Today's message is in a different vein. The kind of marriage relationships you're speaking of, are not at all like the one I reviewed.
Anyway, I hope your job is more pleasant this time around. :)

To be perfectly honest with you Don this poem wasn't written about me. I've been retired from the Federal Government for 18 years now. I was one of the lucky ones by being prepared to allow my wife and myself to have "alone time" periodically. That's the key. I used the info in this poem from what I saw within my family and friends. Some of those ended in divorce...Bill

This is a poignant write and of course the wife is quite right in that she never retires as the household chores are still waiting for her. But the key here is to share the chores so that both of your get time to yourselves, I enjoyed your ranting poem, wise words, love Dolly x

    Well Hello Dolly,

Thank you for your excellent review, I appreciate it.

For some retirement can be a test on how strong a marriage really is. I've known a few couples that divorced after the man retired after working for many years.

The main reasons for that is the man comes home and tries to take over things and being thrown together every day after many years is another reason.

Have a great week my friend...Bill

I chuckled all the way through the poem! I remember my husband's grandmother complaining that when her husband retired, he started to manage her housework scheduling when to vacuum etc. She was not happy. We've slowly merged into semi-retirement together so we don't have those contentions. A very entertaining poem, well written with wise advice!
