What you have written is wonderful, but not a haiku. Here is the definition -- (since this is your contest entry)

Two grammatically connected, concrete images, based upon nature, with either an implied or stated seasonal reference. (For example, we know tulips bloom in spring, so there would be no need to actually name the season, which is called the kigo, when tulips are one of the images.)

The pivot line (also known as the kire) connects the two images. The final line (known as the satori) is somewhat of a summary of what has gone before -- it is an "a-HA!" moment. The poem should be immediate (present tense) and not rhyme, nor use personification. It should be no more than 17 syllables, and follow a short-long-short line format; 5-7-5 is the most common, but not a necessity.

Truly, what love is greater. This is a marvelous satori line to this beautiful haiku poem. Perfect scripture to accompany your work.
Well done and good luck in the contest.

Very nice! I don't believe there is any love greater than He who gave his own life so we could be free! We must believe in Him for he first believed in us. Great!!

Hi Fonda, You've written a nice 5-7-5, but it's not a Haiku. I don't want you to miss out on the contest so I'm going to leave you with some Haiku rules... what you've written is a Senryu... having to do with human nature.

A Haiku has to do with physical nature... trees, plants, wind, rain... you get the idea

the middle line is a satori line: this means that it is a connector between the first and last lines

contains 17 syllables (or less) in short-long-short format

The title of your Haiku will be as follows... haiku(first line of the poem) ... all in small letters... the parentheses are used.

Philosophy of Haiku:
-focus on a brief moment in time
-a use of provocative colorful images
-an ability to be read in one breath
-sense of sudden enlightenment or illumination
-contains a seasonal reference

This is a lovely Senryu... just not a Haiku

In my opinion, I cannot fault this work in any regard - the sacrifice of Jesus was ordained by the Father, and the work complies perfectly with the prompt in its lyric verse. However, I cannot agree with this writer's notes, because I strongly believe that giving up one's life for anyone is a mortal sin, unless purely accidental and through no conscious thought. Our lives are gifts from the Father and not to be regarded lightly. God offers no sanction in this regard, even allowing His precious Son to raise four people from the dead during His time on earth, expressing the value and importance of life, making the sacrifice of His Son that much greater in His love and forgiveness toward us, His creation...

A poignant and inspiring reminder of Jesus' love for us all. Certainly true to form with correct syllable count. You have captured the message laid out in the bible in a most eloquent way. Good luck to you!--Karenina

What a marvelous presentation. The Gospel of John and your words, are melded in our hearts forever. There is no greater love and we should never forget that.

This is a fine piece of spiritual poetry dear Fonda! My only concern is that it is not exactly a haiku. It is more a senryu, which deals with humanity as the haiku instead is linked to nature.
Anyhoo, thank you for sharing!
Good luck!
Blessings and a larger than life hug!
