This is outstanding, Nancy. Tears in my eyes. I love horses and all animals. I've never had a horse but I'm with you all the way on this touching sonnet. You have captured the loneliness of the forgotten animals and there are many. That's why all my pets are rescue animals--but who is rescued--the rescuer or the rescuee. God bless. Marilyn

This is very touching. I would think that most cowboys would want to see that their old horse was well taken care of, even if it couldn't be much use to him in his work any more. Lovely thought what the horse and his owner did together and how useful the horse felt then. Excellent job of getting across the horse's perspective of being forgotten. Like many old people, not much to do but think of the past. Six stars because of the emotion that comes through. judi

Most horse owners do but there is always a few who beat their horse and abuse them in other ways. Poor creatures. Thanks for the review and generous stars Judi. Have great day. Nancy:)

HI, Nancy, and your poem was great. Reminds me of how I cried when I read "Black Beauty" as a child and it described how he was mistreated. judi

Movies like that showed children compassion and love. Look at what they have today!

I prefer writing and reading western poetry. I am 81 and have also been put out to pasture. However, along with my profession I have lived most of my life the cowboy way, sounds like a good name for a western poem, huh? This was very sad and well written. I was with my horse till he died at 26, He remained my good friend up to the end.

We did too, Willie and then we moved to Ely and bought some property and built a small Ranch on fifteen acres. Had it allfor a while until my husband died. Thanks for the review and the lovely six. Have a nice day! Nancy:)

Nancy, I miss having horses as well. I've had quite a few in my life. I used to compete in dressage. Your lovely poem so resonates with me. it's so bittersweet. But the best that can be done to your beloved old horse is to put it out to pasture, keep it well fed and give it your company. Sigh. I loved your poem. Warm regards. Ulla:)))

Yes, as long as they are well fed and have some companions. A horse does not do well alone. Thanks for the review and big six Ulla. Sixes always make my day. Hugs Nancy :)

I love this one, Nancy. So heartfelt and a bit sad.
Each line conveys the tender care you have for horses.
Strong images depict this pony's life now and what it used to be.
Excellent rhyme and meter.
The picture is perfect. Is that you?
A pleasure to read.

I haven't anything to do with horses myself, but I was an avid follower of race horses once, who, liked following other horse. Didn't have much luck, but the st rappers, usually girls, seem to adore them. They are beautful animals, as this maginficent poem says, beautifully smooth, written in generally heptameter, and aabb quatrain stanzas, with a couplet, well done, Nancy, blessings, Roy

A very well-written sonnet about the cow pony which has done his best in his prime years, but now he is old and not of much use, he is totally forgotten and left to die alone.

Nancy,

I've had a heathy respect of horses since one threw me when I was small. Funny though, I'm about ready to give them a go again - now that I'm 56 and a throw would probably break everything I have. Go figure! This was sweet and pensive. I enjoyed. Thanks!

A mature horse will usually sense the ability of the rider and act accordingly. At least we found that to be true of the mustangs we adopted. Thanks for the review and stars, Robyn. Nancy:)

Nancy, your love for horses, that you mention in your notes, shines through clearly in the respect and admiration you show them in your poem. I enjoyed the repetition of the first two lines, and the reversal of their order as fits the poem. Your rhymes, of course, work well, but when do they not??
