What a wonderful sonnet! It certainly meets all the technical requirements. Better yet, it works wonderfully as a metaphor that is summed up beautifully in the closing couplet - it is hard to love something for itself, and own it at the same time - the act of owning may ruin the very essence of that which we love (of course, you said that much more poetically than I just did).

This will certainly be a contender in the contest.

A very well-written Shakespearean sonnet. Flowers look at their best in a garden where they can live their full cycle. As soon asvwr cut it it starts to die slowly.

Well written sonnet about cutting flowers. I agree whole heartedly. Give me a potted plant that has a future I always say. The only thing I would change would be a word in the couplet. I would use the word flower or bloom instead of plant. Just a thought. Well done and Good luck Tony. Nancy

Many thanks, Nancy. I appreciate your comments. I considered 'flower' and 'bloom', but had used both earlier in the sonnet. Also, the point of the couplet was that it is the whole plant, or - in terms of the metaphor - the whole person, that needs nurturing, not just the face of beauty presented to the world. Nonetheless, I value your suggestion. 'Plant' is a somewhat ugly word but I'm at a loss for a more elegant synonym! Best wishes, Tony

I enjoyed reading your Shakespearean sonnet contest entry. I am a huge fan of sonnets and yours did not disappoint. In Texas, it's illegal to pick wild Blue Bonnets. They fill fields and are gorgeous. Good luck with the contest.

Hi, Tony. Wow! This sonnet is outstanding in every respect.

I especially liked this stanza:

"If angels' wings are clipped, they cease to fly;
our flowers, too, will wilt and colours fade,
when severed from the roots they're nourished by.
That kind of love is just a masquerade."

Good luck in the contest, my friend. Bob

Had problem with this posting. Read it late last night and returned to read this morning. The first two lines of verse one... well I stumbled about with those lines, somehow they seemed somewhat awkward.
Ignoring those lines and reading on, thought the poem or sonnet well done.
All in all, enjoyable.

This well written sonnet is so true. We murder flowers or at least shorten their life spans when we cute them. It is odd to think that giving flowers is a sign of love, when you think of it this way.

Good luck in the contest.

Keep writing

Joan

Wow,I LOVED this. I admire the way you can create poetry about consequences for our actions on nature. Homosapiens, in their evolution, have become increasingly selfish about
Taking for pleasure. Your poetry has true depth insight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts so wonderfully.

Hello Tony, a very well expressed sonnet, true to form. I love the sentiment. I hate picked flowers unless they are from a plant that keeps flowering and picking helps them to do so. When I receive flowers I always wish it was a rooted plant. Your turn in the third stanza is particularly good - a really clever poem and I wish you luck in the contest. Warm regards Dorothy
