I love this! Brings back wonderful (smelly) memories of helping with the cows on my grandma's farm. They did things the same way as you. Sometimes we kids had to go get the cows if they were out in one of the faraway pastures. That was fun. Then we drove them to the barn and put them into their stanchions. More fun (no injuries)v, and we finished them off after the milking machine was removed and there was still milk to be squeezed out.
I got to see a calf born. There were always three or four calves. I think cows are just about the prettiest animals (faces, that is) on the continent. I love their milk breath when they blow on you from their big moist noses. I miss cows. I really do. :)
Oh, my cousins had the job of shoveling the ditches and piling it onto the manure pile. Then it cured and was spread on the fields and recycled back into the cows thru their hay and corn (silage). :)

Thank you. We had over 300 cows which was considered a big dairy in the seventies. Lot more chance of getting injured with so many personalities to deal with. They each had their own quirk we had to deal with. When I was a child we milked by hand, no machines at all. Still shitty tails though.

Wow! That IS a lot of cows. Grandma only had thirty, a tenth as much. You all worked hard, and twice a day, no less.
I miss making butter and the taste of fresh, unprocessed milk. Store milk is soooo different. Bland.

This meets the contest requirements splendidly. It is well penned with no SPAG to be had making for an enjoyable read. I had no idea what a rough life dairy farmers had and especially enjoyed the part where you talked about the cow always looking so innocent while painting you in feces. I wish you all the best in the voting and thank you very much for sharing it.

Thank you. Yeah, the dairy life is much easier today. Although, when I was a child we milked the cows by hand and got the tail in the face too.
