Well done on this piece, Roy though I do think that Janis Joplin's/Kristofferson's interpretation was tongue in cheek or even a bit sarcastic but that's an aside. I had to think on your last stanza. There is a cost for anything that is won but that's only my interpretation.

I thought you were reviewing this one with the other review, the shiver one. But you've more or less nailed the meaning of this one. So thanks for the great review and comments, blessings, Roy.

I believe you've misinterpreted Christofferson's words in that song. The meaning is that if you lose your freedom, then what is there left to lose. As far as Christ dying on the cross to save out lives. There is not one person that Christ has actually saved by dying on that cross. The only thing that you can actually portray by his dying on the cross is metaphorical. The one thing that Christ was. He was the best known martyr that ever existed. That is his real claim to fame.
Now for your poem. Even though I don't see your poem in a light that goes with my belief system. I still found your poem to be well written and flow within its thoughts really well. I enjoyed reading and writing this response for it... John

Well John that's your interpretation, unless of course, you are sinless, then I guess you're right, but for untold millions the other is true! Thanks for the great review, and I know the song's meaning, but freedom is like truth, as you have put your meaning on it, people do the same with freedom, make it elusive, making it have no meaning atall. Thanks again,! Blessings, Roy.

Our thousands of years of civilization has spawned countless images that we may revere for we have the knack of idealizing most things we conceive. We may love these things passionately because we might have created them. So our God might have many faces and that is our free right. Are our iconic, idealized images interchangeable? Just a thought. -Ekim777

Kris Kristofferson. And I'm sure he was using poetic license within the context of a specific situation.
I agree with you, Roy. Freedom is a many faceted gem. At least I think that's part of what you're saying.
It's also multi-tiered, and sometimes can be used at cross-purposes (not that cross).
I'm curious, Roy, does the word 'freedom' appear in the bible--in the context that freedom will be ours if we embrace Christ?
Just curious.
Peace, Lee

Galatians 5:1 talks of being free from the yoke of bondage. It's saying when when we sow wrong into the world, we sow dissension, therefore there is a debt we owe, with which Christ paid that debt, His life for ours! Hence freedom from recompense, but yet I'm bought by His blood, how about that for confusion? So hence freedom being elusive! Great review Lee, thanks, blessings, Roy.

Smoothly metered abab quatrains that tells us that we need the storms and wrath to understand times of peace and grace. It also says the we need to die to really live.
Keep writing

Comment from Lesley Collier
A wonderful poem about the true meaning and feeling of freedom as we are sometimes caught in the fleeting illusion of freedom without realizing the only true freedom that exists is the freedom brought to us through Christ's suffering and that true freedom can only be bought through the offering of life for death and not won by battles under other men but by following in the path of the Lord our Saviour. Well written with lots of passion and a lesson to all of mankind!

To me, freedom is a state of mind, something only we can control. Having said that, I can appreciate that it might not feel like that if you're trapped in a body that no longer works, or a relationship that's turned sour. In God we trust.
Your faith is an inspiration, my friend. Thank you for another wonderful poem!
