We all try to deal with winter and the cold the best way we can. It can be hard if the season is long, but seeing the beauty of it is cool too. Love the picture and the flow is great. I enjoyed it!

Superb personification, dear Brooke. Masterfully crafted sonnet with flawless meter, fine rhymes, excellent flow, good phonetics (*like alliteration etc) and good compositional style with a fine volta and insightful closing couplet. I enjoyed your vocabulary too, with multi-syllable words like interloper, invaders, relentless, contemplate, obstacles, extended etc. These give it a god sense of flow, too.
Bravo and good luck.
Very fine presentation, as usual from you!
Warmly, rd

To adewpearl,
Alas winter sends out its mean sense of harsh winds and blowing snow but yet it leaves a wonderland of beauty.
Alliteration:what Winter wants; chilling cruelty
Good proximate rhyming: leads/proceeds

You describe the coming of Winter with gusto! You even find evidence of the "beauty" that Mother Nature provides as she leads her son through his reigning months,
Read this on an evening as the snow falls and the thermometer says 30 degrees F. Heating system working well thankfully.

the lines all scanned well for iambs and pentametre.
"Towards" would have to be pronounced "t'wards" to make it work, right?
Your zealous friend keeps you on your toes ... :)
The final rhyming couplet offers me some comforting advice I will take!
Best wishes for the contest, Brooke.
Love,

Sonali, thank you so much :-) Yes, that is the standard pronunciation of towards in the U.S. :-) Brooke

Dear Brooke,
Contemplate all you like but winter lacks for a softer side. (LOL) He is Mr. Grinch personified. A heart that is frosty to its core you'll just have to wait for Miss Spring to duke him out.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Winslow

Winslow, Happy Thanksgiving to you, too. My Philadelphia Eagles have made thankful people out of lots and lots of people in my neck of the woods :-) Brooke

When winter comes, it does have it's positive points, and the best policy may be to "contemplate this softer side":
"it leaves a world of splendor in its wake."
I rarely comment on photos, but that bluejay is cute--wondering if he should settle down into the snow, just like the ones that fly into my backyard from time to time.
No snow on the ground here.
Good luck in the contest!
Cheers,
DW

Thanks so much, Donald - while they told us yesterday's snow might bring us 4 inches or more, we ended up with less than half an inch, praise be. LOL I appreciate your thoughtful review :-) Brooke

Winter makes me shiver but then it snows, and I mean right after it snows, it's soooo pretty it makes all the cold worth it. You did a great job with this though I think winter has arrived.

Wot a beautiful bird! Wow! I thought we had some beauties - he takes the cake. Knowing you hate winter but in your poem you have written so many scenes about its cruelty and then looking at the beauty. Each snowflake is unique - like a Zebra, no one is the same. Good luck with your prompt! Blessing to you Mrs Snowball.

Thanks so much for your contest wishes, my friend, and your lovely comments. Blue Jays and Cardinals are among our most gorgeous birds, both with the bright colors and crests :-) Brooke

Are you getting enough work to keep you afloat?
-
just barely - the hard part will be summer when the paper grading doesn't bring in money - this being without funds wears thin...

Dear Brooke
This is a well-written sonnet with excellent rhyme, metaphors and personification. It really conveys the winter chill with good imagery. I especially liked
"And yet, in spite of chilling cruelty,
it leaves a world of splendor in its wake.
Although a tyrant ruling by decree,
it also brings the beauty of each flake."
That's so very true - the beauty of a landscape covered in white is refreshing!
I like the finishing lines
"When Winter's cold approach I can't abide,
I try to contemplate this softer side"
All the best in the contest!
