A Life to Remember
by Ulla

I love your story, you kept it interesting from beginning to end. You should write a book.

Check this out=== Until one day, after my fiftieth birthday, I thought it would be interesting to find where (where) I actually came from.

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. Yes, adoption doesn't make anybody less of a person it enhances them. I do remember you sharing about your adoptive mother. Good luck with the contest.

Ulla,
This is such a wonderful real-life experience.
I marvel at what you experienced at being in an orphanage, and then finding parents who freely loved you. (You were a true gift), and you were wanted! Not everyone's familial bond is that strong.
Note: in the paragraph starting with "until", you have typed "where" twice.
Your poignant story is sweet and colorful.
Good luck,
Best wishes,
Cindy

I say, the more love and bonding, the better. I am thrilled to hear how you were accepted and treated with kindness and love. My husband lost his parents in his early twenties and learned that he was adopted. Not knowing who he really was became more upsetting to him through the years. I researched and researched till I found his birth mother who'd kept her secret all her life. Even at 84 she didn't want to acknowledge Mike and he was crushed. I am so happy that you were not faced with that.

Thank you for sharing.

Hugs, Carol

Thank you so much, Carol. I so appreciate what you're saying. I feel for your husband and can understand his grief. I always knew I was adopted so no surprise there. As I said, it was only my curiosity which made me search for my real parents. Not really a desire. Now, of course, I'm so glad I did. I now have a lovely brother and family, we share the same father, and what we also have is Lorenzo, our great-grandfather. Hence my novel. Hugs. Ulla:)))

I thought it was an interesting essay that illustrated how a child has to navigate the world in which they find themselves. Thrust into the orphanage, trying to carve out a space there for themselves, win the affections of parents, instead of being born into it, and then struggling to find their identity and their true origins and roots. It also sheds some light on the origins of your story, Fisherman. I was always wondering about your connections to New England from Denmark, but now here it is. It is also quite emotional, and not all essays are emotional. estory

Thank you so much estory, I'm glad that you can now see the connection to the Fisherman's Son, which is a story born from love.
I had to write this essay and start a contest. Too many contests about family have been released of late, and every single one prohibits adoption as if adopted people are a second class citizen who don't belong in a family. The latest one, was just one too many, and it got my blood boiling. So I created this contest. As it turns out, I'm not alone to feel offended. Ulla:)))

This was a touching, amazing story. It sounds like you were truly blessed to have two sets of parents. Thank you so much for choosing to share your story here.

My first review of this piece was unjustly critical. Reading it for a second time just now caused me to regret the characterizations I had made of this summary of one part of an author's life. I advised myself to consistently read attentively and to take into account both the goals and the length limits that restrain an intentionally brief biography.

Thanks. I'm so glad you thought you could have told it better. Also, given your extensive knowledge, I would like a few examples of other titles. This site is about helping each other. So I've really gone wrong here,
and I'm eagerly awaiting your advise.

I don't know whether you are being sarcastic toward me or sincere or some mix of the two! At any rate, the story you've undertake can be either enthralling or boring, entirely dependent upon how it is told. The fact that strong feelings are named doesn't generate strong feelings in the reader. Summaries are useful, but not entertaining or engaging. I'll try to post a memoir-ish piece by me under my name, Frank Malley, tomorrow or the next day; perhaps you'll see the difference. I don't wish to seem pointlessly critical or supercilious. I spent a lot of my life reading, writing, and reflecting on the subject of communication.

Probably, a mix. Take your pic. So you find my true story boring for which I'm sorry. I wrote from my heart, but I'm so glad you can do better. Your arrogance is amazing. Good luck with your piece. You see, I've read all my life, as well, which my walls bear witness to, but unlike you, apparently it hasn't helped me a great deal. Good luck with it all.
