You follow the pattern of a lot of good people I know. There is no excuse for abusing or abandoning an animal. Your essay is well-written, too.

A good contest entry and a well told story with some strong - and I think correct - opinions that were clearly expressed. I have 2 cats that also showed up here starving

I have five cats and a dog, most of them are adopted. Unfortunately, your story is so true. I agree, animals are not disposable and I can't stand animal abuse. If people cannot commit to caring for animal, they shouldn't have one. I like the story about the chipmunk and your kittens and dog. I have two gray cats too.

This is a very compelling piece for the need to responsibly bring unwanted animals to a shelter rather than abandoning them. The author's story about finding the kittens is heartwarming and entertaining and certainly makes the reader give three cheers for the author who apparently has taken in more animals than the ones in this story. Respect for life in all of its forms is a loud and clear message here. Well done

Thanks. Yes, we have taken in a lot of animals. Some horses wound up at our place when we found them starving somewhere. We would fatten them up and find homes for them Just recently a very pretty black and white cat was dumped at our other farm. You can tell he was a pet; he loves people. I wll find him a home somewheres.

Many thanks for sharing this one. I am with you all the way. We are down to four dogs now, but have had up to seven here at a time.

Same story, buy a puppy and dump it when the kids get bored. Sadly there are no laws here to control the brutality

hugs

Freda

Thanks. We have laws but it is almost impossible to catch these low life scum. As I pointed out, they sneak around in the middle of the night.

Hi pretty. This is excellent. I wish I had six stars for you. Kudos for your wonderful, clearly expressed non-fiction. I'm on board with you in the animal advocacy cause.
There is only one typo that I can see--in the 6th paragraph from the bottom: "It is common to find a farm over run (overrun) with cats..."
Thank you for writing this important prose piece. Marilyn

I love your story and I completely agree with everything you say. I rescued my cat after she had kittens and was thrown out in the streets and her babies killed. My heart hurt for her so I took her in, she is a great cat too and beautiful. I also rescued my dog from a shelter, he is a Rottweiler and was pretty aggressive but now he's a big baby. It is so sad people can do cruel things to innocent animals!

Thanks. We see an awfully lot of animal cruelty out here in the country. It makes so angry but there doesn't seem to be any end to it.

First, your message is not lost on me. You have driven it home solidly by RECOUNTING your own experiences with abandoned kittens and pups. All my pets were adopted from a humane society, and I think I have a soft heart. But mine's rock hard compared to yours. You are a saint! I wish you well with your campaign to educate and reform would-be low-lifes. Rod

Thank you. I would like to do to these low life people the same as they do to dogs and cats. Horses are another animal that gets abused a lot. I rescued some of them too.

Good work on this story. I think your message is loud and clear. I real shame if you ask me. I found one tiny thing in the piece.

If you saw one of them the other two were not far away. Use a comma after them.

Take care,
Russell

Thanks. thanks for the kind review and pointing out my error. I'm surprised there are not more errors. It even upsets me to write about this stuff.

Best wishes for the Non-fiction writing contest. Yes, I live in the country also and all four cats that we now have, have been abandoned. We took each to the vet for care, but left them outside to live. When it got really cold, I brought them all into the house, but only one wanted to stay. He is a wonderful cat. Very well written.
