I commend you for writing this poem. If we do not remember the past we will repeat it in the future. The travesty of war is known best by those that have been there. It is, as General Sherman said of the US Civil war, Hell. Today war is the only solution considered. Well done, Sir.

This is a fitting memorial for the 100th anniversary of this military fiasco. The chaos of the landing and the bewilderment of the young soldiers is reflected in the uneasy rhyth, rhyme and length of the first stanza before the poem settles down into a more steady rhytm and regularity of rhyme. Did you perhaps miss an opportunity here to expand on "Troy"? That famous siege site from the classical days of myth and legend is only just round the corner from Gallipoli. But of course there was nothing mythological about Gallipoli; it was a real slice of history.
I liked the vtouch of burying his medal out oshame. Good stuff.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful but gut wrenching heroic poem. Choked up a bit as I read it! I too served overseas and on boarder protection for a long time, I too suffer from PTSD, but that means nothing compared to what these ANZAC legends went through!

The movie adaption of this most famous battle starring Australian born actor, Mel Gibson, is one of my all-time favorite war films, Bill.
The youngest boy to be killed in the bloody battle of Galipoli was James Charles (Jim) Martin, an Australian youth of only 14 years of age. I thought of his voice as I read this wonderfully written ode to their bravery and courage.
Excellent work! ~Dean

Thank you for your review, it's a sad endictment on our society when a 14 year old boy can slip thru the system and go to war, but this wasn't unusual in those days

You're very welcome, Bill, and you're right. It was an all too common occurrence...

You brought tears to my eyes and my heart. I have always thought it a shame that our young are put in situations that no one should have to experience. Very powerful, thank you for writing and sharing.

I find it a blessing that Australia has a national holiday to honor those who gave the ultimate for their country and for freedom. May those who have paid that price never be forgotten by us. Nice poem Bill. BlessingsPatricia

We in New Zealand celebrate this with a national day on 25 April, Gallipoli being 100 years ago, but still the memory of that day is very much alive here. In Australia they mark it also on that day, cheers Bill

this is an exceptional piece of philosophical poetry and a damn fine social commentary dear bill! the reason why i don't grant you six stars is that the flow of the poem is rather bad. otherwise i enjoyed it immensely.
thank you for sharing!
blessings!

I'm so tired of war and rumors of war. This was a great post. Not too familiar with this particular war but understood the poem very well. I could even feel the heart in the telling.

This is a very true sense that warriors return with, who have left their innocence, friends, and trust behind on a field of fire. Some horrors will never be known.

This poem reminds me of WWl and some of the events taking place that time. This poem dates back to1915 which is a century ago. Bill, the writer recalls of some events in the distant past that, I believe, was a story related to him by some one because that time according to his portfolio he was not yet born . He expresses his feelings to his Mom and Dad while in the front line fighting the Turks in Galipoli in 1915, a century ago. It was a bloody encounter, he said. They were there to fight the Turks.
The feelings evoke was an address to his Mom and Dad describing the pain he was undergoing at the time; some of his comrades dying in the front lines. He is happy. He was lucky and hoped to go home soon. The tone with the rhyme and rhythm is great, my sincere congratulations. Dom
