This is awesome! (...in spite of the creepy picture) ...Right from the first line to the last, both of which were captivating.

I particularly loved the "Unto the crowds..." stanza, which had a fast constantly rhyming pace.

Keep writing. And good luck in the "Poem of the month" contest

Colin

Thanks, Colin! What a fantastic review. I figured that, for a poem about what makes my writer's clock tick, what better image than my profile pic :-). This one really came pouring out of me. Got to love writing like that!

This is head and shoulders above so many of the entries for Poem of the Month, which I am reading in sequence. For the sake of a review, I wanted to collect some thoughts about the meaning of the poem, also the way the layout contributes. But that seems like a food writer deconstructing a delicious gourmet dish that really "says it all" already. You said it all, and so well. Thank you for posting.

Thank you :-). You pay me great compliment. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, just as I was to get the nomination, which I had no idea was coming. Thanks so much for the special rating and fantastic review!

This was very strong; and I am not usually a fan of free verse. But yours was raw, unadulterated power (pun intended). Loved the words chosen, to describe your Muse as an ether connection to your thoughts. Very eclectic. And the picture of the cat killed me (lol), I love cats.

This was great:

My muse,
that hot ephemeral connection
to the magic
hidden twixt my thoughts,
comes out to play at
inconvenient times.

When it's there I am a wizard,
casting wordy spells
like nets across my screen

Wow! This was one of the best free verse poems I've read; one any poet would find entrancing.

You got my vote. Good job, Mike.

Love, Y.

Thank you, Yelena :-). You've given me a great big smile this sunny Sunday afternoon in London. As much as I love forms these days (well, some of them!), free verse is where I came from and it's my favourite way to write, as long as my muse is playing ball, of course! I'm so glad you enjoyed it; I was thrilled to have been nominated for poem of the month :-)

This poem represents how I wish I could write.
You are a wizard. The words just flow and undulate and speak directly to the heart of one who writes (and whose inspiration strikes at the MOST inconvenient time, like in the shower or driving in major traffic).
"casting nets... reeling in meanings...". I am truly in awe here.
And to end with what so often happens, thoughts presented as gifts to be opened, only to have the meanings lost and misconstrued. Sigh...
Absolutely a beautifully done piece of work.

Wow, what a fantastic review! I'm so glad you 'plugged in' so much to this one, as it's one of my most heartfelt works. You're right about the slippery nature of inspiration; that's why read the posts of others on here is such a great way to get me going, because I'm inevitably sitting at a computer at the time! Thank you so much :-)

This was most interesting and extremely well written. Your imagination in excellent. After reading the verse and then the author's notes I've decided to dub my review "Dueling Poets"

Thank you, Joan :-). I'm so glad you enjoyed this journey through my inspirations! I think batting a subject back and forth is a wonderful way to create poetry.

I've read many postings lately about everyone's muses. I don't think I have one. You've described yours masterfully, but I don't have anything like that. Great poem!

Many people go on about how their partner is their muse, or their cat, or their invisible acquaintance from history (say whay??). I have to say, I never thought I had onbe as such, but then it occured to me that half the poems I write are inspired by ones I've read on here, so I guess my muse is the act of reviewing on Fanstory. Of course, it's sod all help when it comes to trying to finish a novel!

    Thanks Fred :-)

A delightful piece of work. Makes you think. I like the way the words and rythm flow. It is an easy read despite the first blushh appearance of it. I enjoyed reading this and I'm not a poetry person. Well done.

Thank you, Waterman! What a wonderful review :-). I do love to write by the seat of my pants, as it were, and then tweak a little afterwards if I plan to post it. This poem, ironically, is about exactly that! So glad you liked it, and I'm thrilled with the sixer :-)

I must say you make writing poetry sound so much more physically and emotionally difficult than prose. I enjoyed this very much and found myself reading it several times and am pleased to say I don't think I misconstrued a single word. Very, very nice work with this one.

Thank you :-). The misconstrue comment was a little sly wink for my regular readers. When the muse is upon me, I actually find poetry pours out of me in a torrent; draining but without much effort. The hardest bit is apply the 'sense' filter to it, trying to ensure it has meaning outside the realms of my own nutty mind :-). I'm so glad you liked this one!

I love the list of un words that celebrate the wizardry of your writing when you are hot, and then the single word, bereft, when inspiration abandons you.
Great use of verbs like snipe, coddle
Wonderful alliteration
Strong rhymes and internal rhymes that add so much to the cadence - love coddle/modeled and inventions/intentions
This is so six-worthy, but alas, I have none. Brooke

Thank you, Brooke! This one just came belting out, so fast my typing couldn't keep up and I forgot several lines before I got to them. As often happens with such poetry, I did have to go back and do some minor fiddling before I posted. After all, one must maintain some small semblance of coherence ;-).

A wonderful Wednesday morning to you Poet!
Mike, good friend, that was one of your best and one of my favorites. The hand of the scribe has written the words of the wise man. You nailed our thoughts and feelings as writers, good for you!
I enjoyed, LOyd
