I knew you had been separated from your birth parents, but I didn't know you spent your early years in an orphanage. And how amazing it was that you remember the boots you were given at such a young age. I noted a couple of things:
and how could I have done? [... how could I have KNOWN (?)]
had apparently taken a interest in me. [... taken AN interest in me.]
This is an excellent entry in the contest, Ulla.

Thank you so much, Jay, for your review. I have made the corrections and a few more edits. I remember only two things from the orphanage, and one of them are the boots. That gift made such an impression on me. Thanks again, Ulla:)))

A nice peek into part of your life, Ulla. It sounds like you were very lucky to be chosen by some special parents. Glad to see that you found your birth parents.

Amazing, heart-warming stuff. What a story. And told in such a quiet, non-demonstrative way. Gripping and moving. Thank you and good luck with the contest.

Thank you so very much. Your words mean a lot to me. Ulla:)))
Comment from Liz O'Neill
Your opening will draw the reader in to know more. The reader will become enamored to the speaker with this thought: "What I do remember, though, are the boots. No-one had ever given me something that was for me only and most importantly because I was me." I love the ending, quite precious.

Thank you so much, Liz. I'm so glad you liked the way I wrote it. The impact on me was so great that I had to write about it for the contest. Ulla:)))

This is so interesting. I'm sure you learned the rest of the story of how and why you ended up in the orphanage. Many adopted children resent their birth parents and don't want to get to know them but it opened up another world for your. I'm pretty sure I would want to find mine if I'd been adopted. I really enjoyed your story. I assume your adopted parents had the means to give you a good home. Was the grandfather who shiped bananas a blood relative or from the other family?

Thank you.so much, Beth, Yes, my adoptive parents had the means to give me a good home..
As for my great grandfather who Introduced the bananas to New England, he was and is my blood relative. My adoptive parents were Danish, my great grandfather, Lorenzo, was American. All best, Ullaxx

Ulla, you were indeed chosen. You have written a very rich story full of love sought out and found. Your parents who raised you did chose you and you were fortunate to find your birth and extended family. Well done. Terry.

Thank you so much, Terry. I think and hope a lot of adopted children/persons can identify with this. Ulla:)))
Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
This is a very moving piece, Ulla, in which you speak simply and honestly about your background, drawing as much as possible on very young childhood memories. I personally believe that, at that age, those memories can indeed be very clear and I have often thought about an event in my own life that occurred round about that age. In your story, that wonderful gift you first received is a poignant reminder of how your life changed for the better and gave you those family roots that enabled you to grow to your full potential. Thanks for sharing your skilfully expressed story and good luck! Debbie

How interesting. Of course I can only remember snippets of my early years as a child, spending the first eight years in England, and the rest in Australia. Adoption has never been easy, you'd think they'd think they'd be a little more relaxed about, instead of playing God, there are some people who should never have children, but when you really want a child...? Beautifully written Ulla, rejection must be the worst thing, but you seem OK. Blessings Roy
Typo : I hit (the) jackpot. 2: taken an interest.

Did you really mean to give me one star????
-
Oh ulla no way would I do that, I will correct that immediate, so, so sorry, thanks for telling me.
-
Thank you so much for changing it Roy. I have made the corrections.
Thanks also for your wonderful and engaged review. Ulla:)))
-
I?ve been given three one star reviews in my time here, but I will never give one star, that?s discouragement on steroids.
-
Yeah, you could.say that!!
-
Yep.

Thanks for sharing the artwork, notes, and story, Ulla. You did a really good job with this, and I got a good sense of how you must have felt. You was so young, but I think it is possible to sense things, whether they are for good or bad. The brain is a powerful thing and can leave lasting images.
You did understand that it was your life, and that it changed for you, symbolized by the boots. I think it is wonderful that you still have them. I like your description of Bammy and how important that bear was to you, as well. I like your ending, and I think you were chosen, too, and I am very glad that you have family today who care for each other.
Emotions that can't be explained when we think of this little girl in an orphanage, and then know what became of her as she grew up and now has her own life and family.
Very well done; good luck in the contest. One thing I learned, is it is hard to put emotions into words. I know they came from your heart and reached mine.

Thank you so much, Pam. You just said it all. I felt I had to write my story for the contest, 'have you been chosen' Yes, I do feel that any child in that situation would feel the same. It's with you for life. Ulla xx

You are very welcome, Ulla, and I agree that it would be with you for life. Do you ever take the boots out to hold them or is it too emotional?
Comment from Debbie Pope
