For this lady probably those two quarters were all she could give, but it actually means more than rich people giving a hundred dollars because it came from the heart. Thank you for sharing this reminder.

This is perfectly timed, Terry, as Giving Tuesday is coming up. The American Cancer Society is always doing great things. Now each specific cancer has its own organization to give to. Enjoyed your story and it reminds me of Jesus pointing out the widow's two mites which was more than all the wealthy gave from their surplus.

That's an amazing and moving story, Terry, especially since the giver is elderly and probably lived on her SS check every month.
Coincidental too. I went grocery shopping this afternoon and bought one of many six dollar bags of canned and packaged food to donate to the needy for Thanksgiving. The cashier added the bag to many others in a large container near the front door. Good to see so many others helping too.

Mark 12:41-44, speaks of the lesson that Jesus taught to his disciples, they watched rich people drop large sums of money into the donation box and a poor widow came and dropped to small coins of little value. Jesus said that the donation of the widow was much greater, because the rich were giving out of their surplus, but the poor widow was giving all that she had. I was immediately reminded of this scripture when you related the story told above.

As a breast cancer survivor, twice, I could hug that woman! Two Quarters was her investment in the hope every cancer victim holds on to... It honors the memory of the many who bravely fight the battle and lose...
It is a light shining on future research...
Awhile back I passed a homeless man sitting on the steps of city hall. He had a fistful of wildflowers that looked very like those growing in the common across the street.
His countenance was so joyful!
I donated and he chose a tulip to pass to me.
I smelled it and asked him if he would do be the honor of keeping it and "selling" it again.
"God Bless you sir, I pray this help you!"--I said.
His reply?
"Oh no my friend! I sell these and give the money to the homeless shelter...so many others have less than me!"
I had presumed. He, however, was lifting his homeless face to God! He was being charitable!
(A chat with the Pastor on another day confirmed this)
I love that you live your life with an untainted heart.
I've been on both sides...
Folks like you maintain my faith in shared humanity.
Today, and every day, if we open our hearts we both give and receive...
Small ripples, huge waves...
They both reach the shore!

Her donation may have been every bit as the widow's mite. Sometimes, it's seems the rich have less to give than the poor not so much in the amount but the percentage of gross income much akin to tithe payers.

Church is everywhere. When I go twice a week to my nonprofit, I call that church. When I wrote the poems for the slaves, I called that church. Sometimes one is closer to God in the woods taking a hike than in a manmade building with people "playing church" for the world to see.
