Dear Bill, there had to be at least one State that had no redeeming features, and I guess New Mexico IS the one that will remain forever miserable in your mind.
I lived there for a year, and got Dysentery, so it is special for me too!

Okay, Suzanna, you win. My trip was a cake walk compared to dysentery.

When I think of New Mexico, Roswell and the aliens come to mind. Your account of the drive where your brother is driving is hilarious and I needed a laugh today. Excellent ditty about New Mexico.

I'll have to stick Roswell in there somewhere. Thanks.
Comment from Gloria ....
Haaa, this is just hilarious. The photograph is beautiful, but I can imagine back in the day pre-air conditioned vehicles traveling in a Buick was a tad uncomfortable.
Local zero is good and funny description, except for to the bearer.
Just the right length, I enjoyed the intermingling of personal and historical elements of New Mexico.
Your humour writing is in fine form here. :)

Now I'm really thirsty and feeling so sorry for your teenager self. Back in those days, no one ever even thought of selling bottled water. And since your dad didn't believe in soda, well, I guess you were stuck being thirsty but then no bladder was taxed when your brother took the wheel. Thanks for the hilarious post!

I believe you disliked your introduction to New Mexico. You are right about the Native Americans and the White Sands National Park. NM has wonderful views of the night sky. Your post is informative in a mostly negative way, which is your opinion, so that's ok.
Respectfully, Jan

I adjust that opinion to fill the backseat of a pizza oven and a thirteen year old guy. I'm sure New Mexico is a nice place to be from.

Triple cage: geography, weather condition and bad driving:"
Seeing the Texas border sign made my heart flutter with the anticipation of eventually getting out the 'cage' and not being in New Mexico." Thank you for sharing and good luck with the next chapter.

This account explains much. I recognize some conditions that might act as a trigger for PTSD. I do not think that I could survive such an ordeal as you have just described. I have much sympathy for you and the ordeal that you must have suffered through.

I have been to Hobbs and Jal, New Mexico. What I remember were the horrible motels and almost as bad little home-owned restaurants. I, too, was so happy to get back into Texas!

Very vivid description of your trip through New Mexico--barren and rest stop-less. I hope the amenities in New Mexico have improved since that time. I could almost see a comedy movie about your family's travels. Of course, a big feature would be your brother's driving. I hope Texas offered a more pleasant experience. Very entertaining and lively. All the personal experience enhances your account. judi
