This poem, Louie, Presented with four AABB-rhymed fourteener-line quatrains and a couplet, gives the readers a glimpse at a soul lost to drink and now kept as the town pet.

Many fight that addiction and lose the battle. It's sad. But happy thoughts, thank you for reposting this. I am so sorry that I missed this wonderful story/poem the first time around, but happy I read it this time. Great job.

Nancy, you are absolutely amazing at creating character, place, and time period, and this poem melds them all together seamlessly. You wring out every last ounce of emotion from this sad character's plight, and you do it all in perfect rhyme (including a few mid-line rhymes) and meter. Another wonderful job!

Actually Louie is a character on the Western TV Series Gunsmoke, Michele. I always thought Louie was an interesting fellow and he played the part well. Thanks for the comments and stars:)

Thanks, Nancy. I didn't realize that. It's probably been about 50 or more years since I watched Gunsmoke. It's a credit to you that I felt the character so strongly from your words, even without having that reference to fill in the details.

Gunsmoke is as interesting as it once was. At least there's no four letter words that are not necessery. I hear or see that word, well any cuss word, I move on. TV or here. xxx

Good for you. I understand where curse words can be appropriate, in some instances, for authenticity. But I absolutely despise gratuitous cursing, as well as gratuitous sex and violence, in TV, film and literature.

This is a compassionate portrait of an addict. Addicts don't know why they do what they do. It's sad that they continue on their self-destructive path despite all the efforts of people trying to help them. Well told in your melodic verses!

Stories or poems are all about the characters, for without characters, there would be nothing interesting to write about. And Nancy, my dear, you certainly know how to make characters that touch our hearts. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the lovely compliment Ric. It has been a while since I have written a new poem. I think I must have had a light stroke. LOL Can't seem to think of a subject now. Have a great day my friend. Nancy:)

This one was posted a tad before my time here. I arrived in March of 2015. You must have enough characters of the Old West to pwopla small township and then some, all those in Boot Hill too.

Hi Nancy,
You do a great job of describing the horrible effects of alcoholism, although your reference of the drunk going home to jail and the kindly Marshall reminds me of the drunk on the old Andy Griffith Show that used to check himself into jail when he was drunk, lol.
Of course, when you think about it, they were making light of a serious problem. Things have sure changed in the last decades towards this disease.
Nice job with this story. I enjoyed the tale and its moral.
Hope all is well. Any snow in your neck of the woods yet?
Bill

I loved this story poem! Great job writing it, Nancy! Very entertaining. Stopped in to check on you and Connie. My two all time favorites from fanstory! I am getting caught up on a lot of things that I have procrastinated about for too long. Hopefully, soon, I will be to a point where I can start writing and reviewing again. Hope all is well with you, my friend.

Nice internal rhyme with 'doors he soon implores'

I was interested to see that alcoholism is not just a new phenom, and that even in the pioneering towns of the west, there were souls who had lost their way. The desperation was the same then - how to find your next drink - but, in your poem at least those that knew him treated him with kindness, in finding him a bed (albeit in the county jail) and getting him to eat some food. I love your telling of tales from the old west, Nancy. They are always a pleasure.
Rose.

G'day Nancy, great work mate. What a sad story in a poem you have told here. It flows very smoothly and sings like an old country and western song. I really enjoyed it. Cheers Fez
