Being no expert on the thoughts of chickens, even though I have often been accused of being birdbrained. I would still put forth the belief that your assessment of what that mother hen must have though is probably dead spot on. This is a wonderful story that truly highlights the fact that mothers do what mothers have always done and that is to act like mothers no matter how strange the children may appear to be.

I'm no expert on chickens either. Maybe she thought nothing of it when her odd brood started quacking. But she sure didn't want them going in the water! Glad you enjoyed my poem. Thanks for the stars.

This was juts a delightful poem! I am a retired special education teacher here in NYC and I can tell you that your pure rhyme, enchanting rhythm and the great visual treat that your words create in this awesome poem, would have been a great treat to them! Congratulations!

LOL. Great story and poem here, Cindy. I really enjoyed this journey. Also, a funny thought in your notes that you didn't know what she was thinking.

Thanks. It's hard to think like a chicken, but I imagine she was pretty surprised by her unusual offspring. Glad you enjoyed.

This is so cool and it shows how things can come together in harmony in times of great need huh. I love how you show us this here. Well done.

What a cleverly composed and written work, it was a poem/story that could be used in any young children's circle, I loved it, great story progression from beginning to end, I loved the gracious attitude of the most delightful mother hen as she's saw the inevitability of the flyaway ducklings, perhaps you could weave in a concluding verse of the ducks coming back in spring! Well composed, cleverly contrived, good luck in the contest! Blessings, Roy.

solid use of rhyming couplets
I absolutely love the true story now told in poetic form
how wonderful is Henrietta the hen who is a mother through and through
good alliteration in phrases like squawked with surprise
good assonance in flutter and thump
what a poignant ending to a heartwarming story
Brooke :-)

The hen who raised the ducklings is real. Of course, I've embellished it a little. Glad you enjoyed the poem. Thanks for a wonderful review.

This is a lovely story of the surrogate mother hen and her brood of ducklings.

The meter is a little inconsistent in places but the rhyme is strong and carries the tale along ell, all the time with a light-hearted and whimsical feel.
