This is a very interesting and sweet piece. It use metaphors nicely to lay out a picture of a friendship, tried and true. Good job and good luck.

I like this approach to a free verse contest. It is simple and free-flowing, yet speaking volumes. True friends are hard to find, and should be cherished, and never taken for granted. Friends cheer us and gude us home in many ways. Well said, and best of luck in the ocntest.

This is lovely! the image of the field of red poppies amidst the winter landscape is striking (and I've seen those poppies) - I liked your little description as it made the images all the more poignant -
"a single star in a black sky

those few friends are, indeed, treasures!

This free verse starts out with a winter-white canvas that made me think of snow. Then there are poppies. So now I am seeing red on white snow. I'm thinking that justifies the picture but the picture looks like spring. After a second read, I see the winter-white is only intended to be a color of canvas, but the word choice pushes a winter scene naturally.

Then the poem speaks of warmth and I'm trying to see how that fits in with a snow image I already have in my head from the above lines. And lastly, you switch to a star in a black sky and it is night time.

I'm trying to make sense of it but the setting of this poem is all over the place for me. I'm thinking winter, spring, day, night.

I do like the visual of poppies in a field and red on white. I do like the idea of a star guiding one home. But, the middle doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like a run on phrase.
A circle of cheer
to celebrate
a whisper of warmth
to embrace

Maybe too, it is so divided in spacing the lines like this. Perhaps I am not connecting the meaning with all the breaks or it needs punctuation?

If I totally missed something here that connects all of these together, please do tell.

    Shalom Yona,
I appreciate that you have taken the time to address specific issues and pose questions about my poem , " in fields of friendship. I shall try to provide clarification.
Although the artwork that accompanies this poem does celebrate poppies, perhaps a field of scarlet poppies, straight out of the wizard of oz, might have been more effective.
Both the winter white canvass landscape and the fields of scarlet poppies are simple metaphors. It is unimportant to specify an actual season when the metaphors are broad. All that is important here is that the poppies represent the welcoming blaze of true friendship. A winter white landscape canvass is a state of mind more than a statement of setting or actual season.
The lines that you pointed out "
"a circle of cheer to celebrate, a whisper of warmth to embrace"
are in this poem to define the gift of true friendship.

I hope that I have answered a couple of your questions. This poem was written as a gift for a dear friend. I cherish and celebrate the blessing of precious friendship.

If " in fields of friendship" still does not work for you, may I suggest " dancing in the kitchen" and rapscallions gift".
It has already been a pleasure getting to know you through your poems and most recent non-fiction account of your health scare.
I will keep you within my prayers.
    Until next time,

Thank you so much for explaining the metaphors. I will revisit this. Sometimes things make more sense when we can get into the author's head. :) Thanks for the warm thoughts and prayers.
