I have never heard of this fear but it sounds horrible, especially since buttons are everywhere. I know Trypophobia. Is that similar? Thanks for sharing this as your worst fear for the writers contest. Good luck with your piece.

Very interesting description of this phobia. I never have heard of this one before. I have other weird phobia's before but this one tops the list.
Must be very hard to go anywhere cause everyone wears something with buttons on it.

That's true about Jobs? I have never heard of these phobia until now.
"But worse than doing a job on a shirt; is when . . . (I don't see the need for a semi-colon there)
A little humor with the unusual places that missing buttons turn up - like under a microwave:-)
LOL! You're worried about the person sucking on the button because of it's shape, I'm reading this and wondering what if they swallowed it?!
This is labeled flash fiction so I assume this is not your personal story. I'm so glad - what a thing to have to fight as buttons are everywhere!
Good luck in the contest - this is a well-written piece, Mark.

Fiction is often based on truth, this is an exaggeration, a what might have been.

Koumpounophobia. Is this for real, you have this condition?
well written post. Goo, error-free writing. Nice work.
Good luck in the contest.

Yes and yes. I do exaggerate a little but it is real.

A pox on anyone who belittles what another man fears, loves, hates or just outright detests. No one knows what engine floats or sinks your boat, who among us can claim to have no phobias. If you are one of the most rare individuals, I salute you. Meanwhile the rest of us will continue to do our best to avoid the triggers that upset us.

I've never ever heard about this phobia, but I'm learning all the time. Thanks for your notes. I went back reading the story and understood it much better. All the best of luck. Ulla:)

I had to look up Koumpounophobia as I was sure you were making this up. But no. Wow. That's a tough one, but you wrote an incredibly good story that read as funny, until this reader realized that this is reality for those who suffer.

It comes from Beans the word. I though that was funny.

I've never heard of that fear - and wouldn't be able to pronounce it. With various fears, the fact that they are irrational does not make them any less real. Your story was quite engrossing! Best wishes for the contest.

I've read about this phobia before which I wouldn't dare pronounce. Without your story, I would consider it not the worst fear there is. But now I'm not so sure! That experience of yours was decidedly creepy! Small edit: sewn into place(s) for no good reason. Well done and good luck, Mark! Debbie

Fascinating! I love Greek-based words so you taught me a phobia word that was new to me. Thanks for the great post and I am not sure if this is truly fiction or nonfiction but you made it sound convincing!
Best wishes in the contest!
