So much thought and learning about Poe. You wrote it beautifully, telling us the story of his sorrow-filled life. Why is it some suffer so? They are intelligent, lonely and afraid, turning to drink (an anesthetic) to still their fears and failures. Well done friend. K xx

Thanks a lot for doing so much research for one of my favorite writers. I love his poem "The Raven" and studies with Jim Bartlett in his class. I also read "Overcoat" a few times. He was such an unique writer and also a powerful and emotional poet.

Excellent.

Very cool and interesting project to work into a story format. I'm reminded of some of the things mentioned in your post that growing up I had awareness of. Your stanza breaks down your thought process very well. Thank you for Sharing your Unique twist on Poe.

I am so glad I held onto that sixth star!
When I was a kid, my older sister once went out with a man, Conrad, who was portraying Edgr Allan Poe. (my mother kaboshed that romance...Going out with an actor!) This was a time when my friend and I discovered Poe for ourselves and his great stories, such as "Tell Tale Hert" and "Pit and The Pendulum." When Conrad came to our home, I told him how much I like Poe. He asked me what was my favorite of his writings. I answered, the poem, "El Dorado." He asked me if I understood it. I told him, no. He then read and explained the poem to me. There's nothing like Poe being read by Poe himself! (Vincent Price or Basil Rahbone would be close seconds.)

This was a wonderful poem about a dark and mysterious individual who was a brilliant poet and writer. Such classics in both poetry and in fiction he gave us. I particularly loved his short stories.

I learned a lot about him from your beautifully written and informative poem and notes, Debbie, and it sheds some light on how he came to be the artist that he was.

If he began courting her 4 years before marrying his wife, that would make her 9 years old. Makes it sound like he was a child molester, but it's interesting that it may have been platonic. A complex man who was brilliant and very talented. - Jim

Thank you again for your kind, supportive review! There was a lot going on there with that man and his marriage didn't stop him chasing after other women. But there was, reportedly, a very strong bond between him and Virginia which lasted until her death. Take care Debbie

Debbie,
This was perfect.
I remember vaguely talking about Poe back in high school (phew, many multiplied years ago) but knew little of his life.

Your poem and your notes captured it in a succinct read.

Many interesting facts contained herein led to a fine read for me.

Well done!
John

Thank you for covering this genius of literature! I love his poetry but his stories are a little too macabre for me. But all of his writing is so perfect and he was such a perfectionist. I think I knew more of this celeb's biography than any of the pop singers that you covered. I guess I don't know entertainers very well. Enjoyed this post!

Wow, this one I bookcase -- more than I ever knew about Poe in the wonderful poem itself, and then the copious notes! You are amazing! That last stanza is the capper though -- perfect!
