"It looked (like) everything I associated with this kind of shop."
Oh my, this is quite the tale, my friend. Did your friend end up buying the camera? Nikon is an excellent make, IMO, if it actually was a Nikon.
Well done, Ulla.

Hi Dawn, thank you so much. No, she never bought it. Needless to say we got quite distracted. Nikon is an excellent make, I totally agree. All I questioned was whether it was a fake. But we were never to find out. Thanks so much again. I have made the edit. Thanks for pointing it out. Ulla xx

You're very welcome, my friend.
Comment from Ben Colder
It sounds like busy New York. I have been there twice in my life and find it so crowded wall to wall people and just about anything a person needs to buy. Sounds typical about the dollar bit. Thanks for sharing, Ulla.

Comment from Pam Lonsdale
Your friend seemed a little mysterious about where she was going and what she wanted to do that, in the beginning, I thought the guy at the door was some kind of surprise she had planned. Maybe a practical joke. But as you say, New York being New York . . .
I'm sure you have many interesting tales from your days in the air. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Pam, no this was never planned, How could it be so? We were just flight crew on one of our many stop overs.
Thanks a lot for the review.
I also want to let you know that I've finished the book. And what a fascinating and harrowing tale it is. What is intriguing for me is that in 2003 I found my birth mother in Santa Cruz. We had seven years before she died. A long story. The same year I also found my birth father in Mass, and my brother with whom I've become very close. I was born and grew up in Denmark with my adoptive parents. Long, long story. Ulla:)))

Have you ever shared your story with FanStorians? It would have to be told in many installments, but sure would be interesting.
Have a great weekend. Glad you enjoyed that book. Can you imagine living through that? I can't.
-
Yes, I have written my story on this site many years ago. It's a book actually. I may resurrect it one day.
No, it's hard to imagine how they lived through that, but the survival instinct is so very strong. What I had the most difficulty with was how some of them actually killed the Indians to feed on them. I can somehow understand to actually eating someone who's already dead under such extreme circumstances but to wilfully kill another human for consumption is beyond me. Sigh! It's a book I will always treasure. Thanks for leading me to it. Ulla xcx

The American mentality at the time was that Indians were animals, therefore their lives were expendable. The Manifold Destiny was a pass for the white man to go west, take the Native's land, and eliminate them if necessary.
-
Yes, you're right, the mentality was like that at the time, but it still sits badly with me.
Comment from estory
Yes, this is New York. The city of dreams, and broken dreams, as John Cheever put it. The suspense is good here, you take us on a walk through the jumbled markets of the city expecting to find some treasure among the odd little shops of the west side, but what ends up begging attention is the alcoholic desperate for another pipe dream, and how you brush up from a happier world against one that is damaged and lost. estory

Thank you so much, estory. This is a great review. You really got the gist of this wee story.
Thank you so much, again, Ulla:)))
I just love that city.

Ha, you are always good for a diversion or contest. You can't help getting away from the story we all want to follow. Good diversion anyway and well done. What about the Queen stepping down in Denmark? Our Princess from our Tasmania becoming Queen, soon? Now back to your main story, please.

Well, I've had a hard time of it of late. It's been hard to concentrate. My brother has just come out of heart surgery and is doing well, thank goodness, but not so his best friend, who committed suicide just before Christmas, leaving a wife and three teenagers asking why? I knew Mike as well. And now, to cap it all, the brother in law of my brother and his wife is dying from a galloping cancer. I know him as well. So it's hard to concentrate. Ulla:)))
-
Aww so sorry. Now I understand. Hoping, in spite of all this, you have a happy New Year. I already posted about our girl from Tasmania soon to be Queen of Denmark!
Comment from Jacob1395
That must have been scary for you, being ushered behind the counter, as you wouldn't have known what the man wanted at first, but that last line did make me smile. I just noticed one typo, you've written "thought he would make the profite of the day." Did you mean to write profit? I really enjoyed this piece. Excellent writing.

Wow! This sounds a pretty scary experience, but luckily all was well at the end and the poor man even got his drink. Just a couple of little spag issues to fix - profite and camara. Thanks for sharing your story and best wishes for the contest! :)

Thank you so much, Navada. To be honest with you, I think.the shopkeeper was more scared than us. It was quite funny, really. But of course you could never know. I have made the edits. Thanks for pointing them out. Ulla:)))

So you went to a rather undesirable part of New York City? Your friend was quite brave to risk going away from the touristy places. I liked how you said "sleazy smile" and how you showed your suspicion about whether the camera was really a Nikon. Best wishes in the contest!
Suggestions:
reasonable priced, (reasonably)
with it's mix of people (its)
the profite of the day (profit)

Thank you so much, Helen, for a great review. I liked that part of New York myself, away from all the tourists. A bit further south and it's known as Hell's Kitchen. Ulla: xcx
Comment from Paul McFarland
You have illustrated perfectly why I will never go back to New York City. I live in rural Maine, and my goal for the rest of my life is to never visit a large city again.

Hehe, I do understand what you're saying, but I do want to have one last love affair with New York. I have so many memories from there. I'll visit my family in Mass later this year and New York will be included. Lol. Ulla:)))

This is sad and still amusing. The drunk could grin at his own foolishness and still want to get drunker than he was as he lay before the door. At least he was a happy drunk. You told your story well and we readers realize it was at least midmorning when this occurred.
