This is a terrible indictment of society that animals are treated like this and it is so very sad to hear of these incidents. Your kind heart has relieved the suffering of some of these animals but the fault lies with those who should be prosecuted for such crimes. A tender and caring post and I wish you luck with the contest, thank you for sharing your experiences with us here, even though they are sad, we must never shy away from what is really happening in the world, a well written post, love Dolly x

Thank you. It is a sad situation with no solution in sight. These perpretators are almsot impossibe to catch. I know, because I have tried. They are evil and sneaky.

Excellent rant, pbb. It's just hard to get into the mind of anyone who would do such a thing. I like your solution too. I have the same fantasy about all the politicians who are ruining our lives. Round them all up and transport them to a desert island somewhere and let them rule themselves. I have a feeling there would be none of them left in a very short time. - Jim

Thank you, and thanks for the six stars. I love the way you think. Politicians and animal abusers should all be eliminated from this world, or at least removed from society. You should write a rant about politicians.

Bless you for caring for all these abandoned animals! Thank you for giving them a new life and restoring their trust in a human. I wonder if these people were not the actual owners but people who didn't want to inherit the animals? I don't understand why they wouldn't they them to the shelters. I can't understand how people who love their pets would abandon them. Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you. You're probably right. In some cases, like the Persian cat, I suspect her owner passed away and the realtives didn't want her. We have a problem here in Michigan that most of the shelters are so overloaded with cats that they won't accept anymore. That is still no excuse for abandonment. If they don't want the animals they should have them euthanized. Death is better than abandonment.

Or how about riff raff who have animals but don't treat them well. I don't know if that might be worse. We lived next door to some & couldn't take it anymore and reported them. It's good you & your husband are around for some of them.

Thank you. I agree, animal abuse is just as bad, or worse than abandoning them.

We have three cats. One was a rescue cat, who is still very timid when strangers come, even six years after we got her. One is a feral cat that had been 'fixed' by Animal Control and then re-introduced into the feral cat population in our area, which is very, very low in numbers already. He is kind of a guard cat now. This rant article made me think that people are not committed to long-term responsibilities. It makes me wonder if people in a prison population or half-way house could be assigned to take care of animals as part of their rehabilitation. That way, they would be learning how to consider other living creatures' needs. I love this line of yours: Antarctica crosses my mind as a great spot to leave them.

Thank you. Yes, a pet is a long-term responsibility. If you are not prepared to care for an animal properly, you have no business getting them.

Thank you for sharing this rant contest entry with us. I completely agree with you. I have a dog and two male orange tabbies that we rescued. The cats from a drainage ditch when they were but a few weeks old. Thes people are horrible, scums of the earth. Good luck with the contest.

Thank you. It's good to know other people feel as I do. When we had the dairy farm, I knew of other farmers who had lots of cats they never took care of. Their cats interbred and were sickly. Most cats in these kind of situations develop respiratory illnessness that kills most of them. They live terrible lives, and die painful death. Neglect can be as bad as abandonment.

Good rant, and a very understandable one. And your location off a highway out in the country sounds the perfect spot for the abandoners to abandon, more's the pity. Your pets are the lucky ones. Good for you. My daughter has 3 rescues, one Brindle boxer female who sits on my feet and looks up at me with these soulful brown eyes, named Tigger. What a sweetie. The last one she got is young, growing to be pretty big and drives poor Tigger crazy.
Anyway I'm glad you feel better, and I hope your rant somehow made it to some sleazeballs.

Ugh. This is such an infuriating situation, indeed. I couldn't agree with you more. I also like your solution and agree with the reasoning: warm jail cell? three squares a day? Nope; that hardly seems fair. I also recall what I've read about sociopaths: their punishing way with people almost always began with, first, torturing animals. Abandonment is torture for all the reasons you pointed out. So all these perpetrators have the ability to be just as unfeeling toward humans...and there they are walking among us.

Very well done "rant." I hope it garners lots of votes at the polls.

Thank you. I agree, a person who abuses animals is just as likely to do the same to a child or spouse. It is a big problem in our society.

I can understand your rage .I myself love cats and I have looked after many i my life .Now in the apt complex where I live I am not allowed to keep pets.
I liked your idea of punishment for those humans.

Thank you. Rage is putting it mildly. I can't put in writing what I would like to do to those dregs of humanity.

An excellent rant. So heartfelt and meaningful. Well done and I trust that this does well in the contest. One cannot help but be moved by the things you write; human beings can be so cruel and heartless and you bear the brunt of this superbly. Well done you!

Thank you. It's an ongoing problem in our society. Animal abusers often abuse children or spouses.
