Very well written and amusing. You did well to mention that he hated cheese ahead of time, so we knew why they were looking at him. It is interesting that he didn't hate cheese when you cooked it.

Thank you so much, Carol. I'm glad you liked it. He absolutely loved that dish, and often asked me to make it. Bless him. Ulla:)))

Ah ha! So the way to a man's heart is through his father's stomach!

I enjoyed this cheesy tale, Ulla (that was a pun, not an insult!)

Did you move from Denmark to Spain? I imagine that would make the current ridiculously high temperatures even more unbearable.

A fun story, well written. Best of luck in the contest.

That's a really good story, Ulla. Raw cheese is quite different than cheese in a cooked dish. Your father-in-law was a good sport, and he also got a surprise with a great tasting meal.

For him to make that concession makes him a very kind man, this is the way it should be,, although my mother was usually uncomplimetary when it came to my wife, but Elaine put up with mum, making up for my sister's lack of grace, but also a tribute to you Ulla, I can't remember anyone not liking cheese, unusual, beautifully written my friend blessings Roy

He was a lovely man, and I always liked him. He was the first person I've ever come across who didn't like cheese. But he loved that dish! Bless him. He's long dead now. But I can still miss him. Ulla:)))

Plenty of personality in this little life lesson vignette, plenty of humor, and I think there is a moral to it too; It's better to make a gesture of acceptance to someone new coming into your family than stick to your foibles. I thought you built up some good suspense, all the details of how you imagined the dinner and prepared it and that stunned look on your father in law's face; that made it come alive. estory

Thank you so very much, estory. He was a very likable man. Not because he ended up liking my dish. He just was. We always liked each other. Bless him. Ulla:)))

This is a wonderful story, Ulla. You told it with aplomb, laced with emotion. I really enjoyed reading this true story and gaining insight into your past. Well done and I wish you luck!!

What a heartwarming story, Ulla. Sounds like you opened your father up to a new taste experience that he found out he enjoyed after all. He reminds me of my mother-in-law who grew up with very plain-tasting food, and she developed a very bland palate. I know she would like things if she just tried them, but she's like a little kid that way who balks at anything she's not already familiar with. But I persist and have served her things she would never dream of ordering in a restaurant, such as Mexican cheese enchiladas, and all sorts of gravies on her meat. And she ends up really loving them.

Great story with a happy ending.

Two small grammar problems:

"My husband and I was not long back from our honeymoon," - should be "were" instead of "was."

"Everyone were pleased to accept my invitation," - should be "was" instead of "were" because "everyone" is treated as singular.

Thank you so much, Jim. It was such a heartwarming experience. Then again, we both liked each other. He lived to the ripe old age of 95. We kept in touch, although his son and I divorced after a long marriage. I've made the edits. Thanks so much for pointing them out. Ulla:)))

Sometimes you can bring men round from food they claim not to like. They are very strange creatures. My father hated Christmas cake for 20 years... until he deigned to try it. Then suddenly it was his favourite, and he bemoaned the fact we only got it once a year. kay

They are, I agree but, my father-in-law, bless him, was simple at heart. He honestly didn't like cheese, but he said the way I incorporated it into the dish made it taste lovely. What more could I ask? Thanks again. Ulla:)))

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I am glad your father-in-law was gracious enough to try it. My father-in-law wouldn't even have attempted it. I enjoyed reading and wish you luck with the contest.

Thank God he tried it and the evening was saved! You're a most gracious hostess wanting to please. I have more food intolerances and allergies than I can count. I miss cheese so much I could cry. I don't know what moussaka is, but I'm sure it's divine.

Sending you my best today as always, and best wishes for the upcoming contest.

Moussaka is a Greek dish. It's layered with a spicy tomato/meat sauce with potatoes, zucchini, eggplants and various herbs. I then whisk 2 eggs with a cup of milk pouring it over. I then cover it with a very thin layer of breadcrumbs. Then a thin layer of grated mozzarella. Optional. I bake it at 200 Celsius/ 450F? For a little over an hour. It's delicious.
Thanks so very much, Sally. I just got carried away here. Ulla xxx
