This is a deeply moving write about death and how it has affected you throughout your years. In Victorian times, death was common place and people were prepared for it because it happened often and indeed the front parlour was reserved for the body in a coffin of many loved ones. These days death is rarely discussed and so people have difficulty in dealing with it. It is so sad that the child you mentioned was not talked of or remembered, but maybe it was just too painful for those grieving, but I think it is good to talk about the person who died as it helps everybody to come to terms with their passing.
You must have seen much death during your young years in the army and it becomes a robotic function dealing with the practicalities and there is no time to mourn. This can build up and cause problems later when life settles down as we never forget such experiences.
I am sorry to hear you suffered with a heart attack and it was probably due to your life-style which you changed and survived.
This is an honest and touching write, from the heart and I enjoyed your candour.
I just have one suggestion for you for this line:
(He just simply was never more). (He simply was no more) or (He simply was never there anymore).

Dolly, I am so grateful for my life and ALL of my life experiences. It has made me who I am. I am a survivor. I feel very sad for the Viet Nam vets that did not, would not or could not get the hep they need(ed), thank you for the edit suggestion.

The road we travel is long and hard. The most we can hope for is that someone remembers us every day after we die. Some are closer and remembered fondly; others, well, the best one can say is 'hope to see you in Heaven'... Thanks for sharing your thoughts... ...ec

This is well written and something we don't like to think about. A loss of a loved one is a very difficult time. I am glad you shared your two experiences with death and how you have eased, my mind at least, of all the fears surrounding death. My father shared a similar incident that happened to him. Very well done. I wish you luck in the contest.

This autobiographical piece on the theme of death was very well-written and held my interest throughout. Most of the entries to 'true story contests' don't manage to do that Could that be because I saw its relevance to me in my eightieth year, I wonder?
The opening was masterful as it gets every reader immediately thinking of the first death or dead person they saw. Mine occurred appropriately enough on the hunting field when I was eighteen years old and, surprisingly for one who spent the 1960s in the Royal Marines I did not experience the death of another human being until long after I had returned to civilian life, and my mother died when I was forty-nine. So I cannot speak with any authority on death only on writing about it.
